Well done Scotland

I didn't see a lot of the game, how did Scotland win?

I think the question should be, how did ireland lose?

it was just our day. kicked our points. we have so many narrow last-gasp defeats over the last few seasons.....we were due one.

Ireland reminded me of Scotland in attack. No cutting edge. Always finding the man instead of the gap. O'driscoll is still a great player but he has lost more than a yard of pace and it shows.

Wonder what goes on in O'Gara's head?

Ireland lost by letting the new boy take the kicks.

I predict wins for Wales, France and Ireland.

England are probably the best team in this yrs 6N and the coach is doing the best job of any of the coaches...but it's about time some French unpredicability turned up. I predict it will be today ...

England are the best side in the 6 nations but I predict the France will beat them because the French are unpredictable??? A bit like Paul Merson when he talked about Arsenal's unbelievable belief.

England only look OK the rest have just been shockingly bad, not seen any  good rugby, and if France do at least try they will beat a very poor England, absolutely dull

can see at least 8 English players in a Lions XV if I was picking today

25/02/2013 at 21:38

Or even more if they had a pussycats XV

possibly.  possibly not.  a Lions XV has a different dynamic to a national XV and despite someone being good for their country doesn't mean that will translate into a Lions team.  I could see a few Scots and Welsh in a starting Lions XV but perhaps less Irish than would have been predicted at the start of the 6N.

Maybe. The thing about this English side (compared to previously when they were heavily reliant on Johnson and Wilko) is that there are few genuine stars, but they play magnificently well as a team. very strong. very professional.

Take that in a different context with a different coach, it may not work as well.

That said, there aren't many decent candidates from the other home nations. Sad to say, I wouldn't have any Scots in the XV on current form. 6 or 7 to make the plane, though.

tda - I think Ali Hogg is in with a good chance at full-back - probably between him and Halfpenny although Kearney could still be in with a shout.   and Jim Hamilton has stood up as a good disruptive 2nd row this season - he's been impressive enough to make a starting XV in my view

26/02/2013 at 11:54

I like Hogg too (stuart btw) but he has a way to go to keep Halfpenny out. He'll make the plane and keep him on his toes though. we'll see how scotland v wales goes

Kelly Brown will go too as a solid all-rounder, and maybe laidlaw although his defence is very suspect.

are we going to be boring and post our Lions XVs?

26/02/2013 at 11:54

and yeah I like hamilton. he's a tough guy.

26/02/2013 at 12:08

oops - Stuart Hogg....that's the problem with you Scots - you all have the same surnames.....unlike us Welsh....

Kelly Brown - maybe.  there's a lot of competition for the flanks with the likes of Robshaw, Warburton, Wood, Tipuric, O'Brian etc and the guys like Beattie, Ryan Jones and Lawes who can play in a number of positions

For me, the problem the Lions face is the same one they've faced for the last few tours, the half backs.  Probably in pole position at the moment are the English half-backs, and they are okay but not what I'd think of as Lions test half-backs (maybe Youngs when he is at his best, but he is inconsistent).  Sexton keeps looking like he should be and then doesn't quite perform to expectations.  There are any number of good forwards, centres, FBs, wingers, but all the candidates at 9 and 10 have their limitations.

The likes of Gregor Townsend, Rob Andrew, Dewi Morris, Matt Dawson, Mike Phillips, even Stephen Jones were not really up the mark, on recent tours.  Honourable exception - Robert Jones (and Howlers would have been).

F/B is ridiculous, you could take any of 6 excellent players (Hogg, Kearney, 1/2p, Byrne, Foden, Goode).

26/02/2013 at 14:35

Sexton is the obvious choice at 10 for the Lions but as you say, he's inconsistent when he's not kicking.  Farrell has no game beyond kicking and arguing with other players.  Biggar at least tries to attack with the ball in hand but he's not quick enough to be a true attacking player.

and at No 9 I prefer Care to Youngs, and Philips offers his 9th forward game to a tour.

Gatland will be struggling with the half back choices

FB, Care is also very good when at his best but inconsistent.  In form for Quins at the moment, though.

Mike P has always struggled against Genia, but I can see Gatland going for him.

Fingers crossed for Murrayfield, eh?  I've got a ticket for the game in Cardiff the week after, I think we'll struggle in that one if we haven't beaten the Scots reasonably well.
