I don't like all the extreme consumerism and commercialisation of what is, allegedly, a religious celebration.
MrFrog and I are doing our usual volunteering thing with homeless people for the week. It started early for me on Friday when a guest I knew from previous years showed up at work (I work and volunteer for the same organisation). Not a chap I like, but he's human and was in a state. He was also really pleased to see me and smiled as I remembered him. His story is not uncommon in that though he is now classified as 'vulnerable' and has a local council who will accommodate him, his other issues prevent him from settling. He left his b&b on Thursday night to go and sleep at Heathrow. He needs serious help, not just a roof and four walls.
Last night on our first shift, we found that a friend who has volunteered with us for several years was there as a guest. Always fragile something has tipped him over the edge this year. At least with us for the week he'll be with people who really care for him and hopefully we'll be able to get something sorted out for him.
Merry Christmas.
