It will be Boris, and it will somehow incorporate one of his bikes, cycling power to the people

We could have some "yoofs" set fire to a routemaster bus in commemoration of the British tendancy to get out of hand every noe & then...

Typical British Understatement to say Sir Steve is the greatest British Olympian.

He is THE greatest Olympian EVER.  So for me he is the choice. Coe vs Ovett is an interesting one though Not Beckham. If it is a sports person then not Football. This is the rest of sports event. Nothing against him personally just wrong choice. Roger Bannister, Tanni- Grey yes maybe

Should NOT be a politician, keep politics out of sport thank you.  Plus not Boris, he'll set light to his hair, the President of the IOC, the stadium, the Olympic flag, in fact anything and everything other than the actual cauldron.

I really think it should be Sir Steve though. The only downer is that might not be a surpirise. OK but that just means you make the method of lighting the flame different. So put him in a boat that flys up into the air (the flame attached to an oar) like Hades into the Underworld - well probably the absolute opposite but  Also a bit of Greek Mythology has some resonance (assuming hades was Greek, I always mix up my mythologies ))

Mary Peters would be a good choice, not just for winning the gold, but also for all the work she's done in Northern Ireland since then. Daley Thompson would also be an interesting choice, provided they let him whistle the national anthem.

Wouldn't surprise me if Tani Grey Thompson lit the flame at the Paralympics.

Btb, couldn't agree with you more, with one slight exception.

Why do we have to have a novel way of lighting the flame. Couldn't we just forego the whole panto bit and have a simple dignified, presenting of the torch to the cauldron, treating the whole process with the respect it deserves.

Think a lot of things about the Olympics could be a whole lot better if they were just done with pure understated dignity, rather than trying to chav everything up.

Whoever pays the most !

The best choice would be Seb Coe, but as a white, upper class middle aged Tory male he has no fecking chance whatsoever, despite the fact he is one of our greatest ever Olympians, and, arguably, brought the Olympics here in the first place.

Btw I don't like him but you can't deny that he is a big time achiever.

Bruce Forsyth...... dancing up to light the flame!

I think Daley Thompson - everyone likes Daley - Coe has him down as Britain's greatest ever Olympian too.

like others I'll go with Redgrave with Daley a close 2nd.   and who knows there maybe more than one

I don't think Coe will get it as he has a high enough profile with LOCOG and it would be taking away some of the spirit of the games if it was him

My money's on Steve Redgrave. Was watching the London marathon coverage this year and James cracknell was being interviewed after his race, and said something along the lines of 'I might just push Steve out of the way and light the flame' before sue barker changed the subject......
