Totally Agree with Beaches as the saddest film. Although along different lines Schindlers List and the Green Mile were also pretty depressing although excellent films!!

music - Beethovan's Moonlight Sonata - particularly in the film Immortal Beloved (about the big B) where he plays this with his ear resting on the top of the piano trying to hear it.
