I'm not on Twitter, nor have I any plans to be.

However, it's obviously huge and we all know with that comes good and bad. I just seem to hear about the bad though, is it just a big bitchfest outweighing the good stuff?

You are on Twitter, you're just not using it

I did sign up because people from here were asking me to, but never got into it. And also when I have been told of comments on there, it's just bitching.

Actually.. the same can be said about facebook..   some people use it obsessively... others are more selective...

What I like about FB is people's photos, I wouldn't use it if it was text only.

The only reason I'm on there at all is because certain organisations use it as one of their preferred media for keeping people in touch with regular updates.  (Will there be a session running this morning at Herne Hill velodrome after last night's rain?, that sort of thing.)

I keep the inane social chit-chat guff for facebook, although even there I think I have pretty good quality control.  People keep asking me if my Soup of the Week feature will start coming with recipes.

Hey, if you're on FB, join the RW Forum FB group. It's fun.

I run the twitter account for my cycling club - I keep it to club news and no personal opinions on anythingi- its quite quiet - I don't want it personally although now I am doing it for the club I can see the benefit to follow clubs and events etc.

Depends who you're following or friends with I guess.

I use it to follow my interests and receive more regular updates than I would elsewhere, I prefer it to Facebook.

You still have control over who you allow to see your stuff and follow you. I think it's useful

I never tweet but do use it to get updates on a few things that are important to me.  The company I work for use both twitter and FB so almost need to nowadays because of the job.

I was at an annual scientific conference this week, and it was all about communication, and we were told if we don't tweet, we should start! As others have mentioned here, when used appropriately, it can be very useful and informative.

I have an account, only because I fill it with running stuff mainly, and have contacts who are running related which provides helpful links. This separate twitter account is so that I don't bore all my non-running FB friends with my running!

That's precisely the problem, though, as I see it, being told that if you don't tweet you should start. "Communication" for the sake of it. Lots of people with nothing to say wasting time filling up cyberspace with crap for other people to waste time reading.

It may be as much as 50% useful but the other 50% is utter guff.

Stop f*cking tweeting and MAKE something - knit a jumper, cook a casserole, go for a run, seriously there are much better things people could be doing with their time.

My twitter is full of runners, triathletes and scientists. I tweet complete crap and enjoy doing so.

I have also made contacts who are useful to me at work from a product point of view and also a know how angle.

Like everything else it's what you make it.

I think you're underestimating how useful twitter can be as a professional tool rather than just another medium for facile social interaction.  Presumably the guy at the scientific conference isn't talking about the 50% guff that's "communication just for the sake of it".  I'm not a scientist but I have friends who are, and use twitter far more than I do. I trust them to use their powers of BS and guff-detection to work out whether it's useful or not.

you're not effiing wrong there......

as AJH says, it's what you make it.  and as others have said, it've very useful for getting updates on things you're interested in.   if you want trivia - there's bucketloads on Twitter.  if you want breaking news - loads of that as well.  company updates - lots.

we also use Twitter from a business perspective

to me, Twitter has more usefulness than Facebook and this place these days

You do make an excellent case for the useful 50% Phil but I still find the other 50% pretty concerning.

The first time round i signed up to twitter, i found it full of rubbish and boring updates from celebrities that I actually probably didnt care too much about. But since then, i use it as a media tool for my business and more recently to blog about my running, all my nike+ guff goes straight there and i follow a lot of stores, coaches and runners for info and stuff. I'm on it more than facebook now

Twitter has a good combination of tosh & inspirtional stuff. For example there are bloggers who post up links to their websites showing new logo / branding designs that are just a click away. These are a source of inpsiration to me which I like. Like anything in life, most of the boring stuff I just scroll past.

I agree that we now live in an inforamtion overload environment and deciding what to filer out can be tricky sometimes.

You have only to look at the threads on this site. Most of the time I just scroll down to see what's new etc and click on what I want to view.

That's a bit like me and YouTube.  I've had hours of fun watching the videos, but regret pretty much all the time I've spent reading the comments.  Makes me despair for humanity.

I like twitter and dip in and out of it when time permits.
It's less time consuming and easier to work than Facebook I find.

My work has some kind of internal twitter site but thru email. They encourage you to join that but I have enough to do without getting more communication coming through about things that just aren't relevant to me or my job.
