I can't quite work out who it's aimed at.

Is it the person with aids - trying to encourage them not to have unprotected sex to prevent other people getting it? In which case, suggesting that they are on a par with Hitler might not be the right approach - it does strike me as a little extreme.

Is it aimed at the uninfected - in which case I'm not sure what message they'd be getting from this. Don't have sex with someone with a hitler moustache and you'll be fine? You can "see" if someone has aids from their apperance?

Frankly, I'm rather confused and don't know what to think about it.

But then showing two blokes going at it would be un-pc, although trivialising the image of the most hellish mass murderer in history is apparently ok.

JB.........the fact is that most people accept that sex between two men has a chance of infection...................

what a lot of people still ignore is that they can get infected by having straight sex...............which is how the majority of infections are caught now...........

but I don't think this video is any good............

The reason AIDS charities dislike this ad is because they feel it criminalises people who are HIV positive.  i.e. Hitler knew what he was doing and willfully killed others.  They feel that using this analogy in this ad with HIV will further stigmatise people by creating the impression that they willfully infect others.

If anyone wants to know more about the complexeties of criminal transmission, here you go http://www.avert.org/criminal-transmission.htm but we know that most infection is transmitted by people who until they became symptomatic, had no idea themselves that they were positive.

A much stronger ad would have been an ad depicting a perfectly normal happy couple where one becomes ill and finds out they are HIV positive and having to trawl through their address book to let exes know that they better get tested...

I'm well aware that AIDS can be transmitted between heterosexual couples, thank you. In South Africa 25% of the population is HIV positive and erm, they're not all gay.

I was drawing attention to the fact (and it is a fact) that aids was and is more prevalent amongst homosexuals than heterosexuals, and yet ads seemingly never draw attention to this.

Much of the 80s propaganda was aimed at gay men.  However much of it is targeted at gay clubs, massage places etc etc by means of outreach by dedicated public health staff, leafletting etc as opposed to country wide TV ads.

Current UK stats show it's pretty much 50/50 with heterosexual infection slightly outnumbering gay transmission, however it's actually not as clear cut as that as there is a considerable number of men who identify themselves as primarily straight (rather than bisexual) yet have gay 'experiences' from time to time, which is why "in the field" we now refer to "men who have sex with men" as opposed to "gay men" as the first way outnumber the latter.

But the population isn't split 50/50 gay/heterosexual so the prevalence must be higher amongst gay people. plus gay men have sex in ways which make infection more likely.
