What makes a Hot Thread a Hot thread?

I look at the heading and think these should be popular/topical but see everything from threads with 1 hit to hundreds of thousands, from 120 views to 200,000, from hot current topics to out and out spam.
What's the criteria and can we make this thread about hot threads a hot thread

Given that one of the managers at work says that he looks like Daniel Craig, and that I don't watch TV so have no idea what he looks like... I am guessing he really is quite a minger.
