Sorry LB but it does state that there will be pens according to your finishing time .

I definitely think you need them even with "only" 2000 runners . Nothing worse than having slow runners blocking your way at the start . And its just not safe .

Don't remember pens from last year, but you could be right Kevin.

Slower runners are always going to be a problem for faster folk until the race organisers make people provide proof of a previous PB before they allocate pen places, as we have constant proof from every Great North Run!

I'm not sure there were pens last year, everyone just seemed to gather around the area in which the pacer closest to their time was.

I hope there are some slower ones among you! Dont worry im honest about my times and wont get in anyones way hopefully just gonna be using it as a training run as I havent been able to do enough training but still dont want to be last!

Hi Everyone!

Bit late should have looked for a thread on this earlier. This will be my first half marathon, im looking forward to it but im slow so will be starting a the back and finishing towards the end. Hoping to get round in under 2hrs 30.

I did this event last year (as my first ever race) and finished in 2:49, and there were still people finishing behind me.  I think the last finisher was about 3hrs 20.

Having made a serious effort this year and with a couple of other events in between i am looking to finish in under 2:15 ( i recently did a full HM training run in 2:14:57)

I am sure that there are some people out there that would call 2:15 slow, but for me i'm well chuffed. and anyone who finishes, regardless of time, has achieved something.

I recall their being signs with predicted finishing times on them, but we were not penned in. I'll be starting near the back and finishing at the back I think!

I want to get cosy in the miggle of the pack....

(Keep warm)

Me too, got a PB last year on this course, but am not going to get anywhere near this year so will be pleased to get carried along by the pack (literally if I can swing it!!) and aiming for 2hours

Does anybody know how many different pace groups there are likely to be? Will it be something like 1:30, 1:45, 2:00 and 2:15 or will there be some at smaller intervals?

Are there pacers?

29/09/2010 at 18:13

From the race pack:

"We will have a team of New Balance Pacers who will help you keep pace with your target time throughout the race"

Oh great thanks!

Just not sure what'll happen when I turn up and say "My target time is 1:53:07, and I demand a pacer to help me keep pace with it".

Usually they have something like 7 min mile group , then 8 , then 9 and so on . Unfortunately I run just under 8 minute miles and nowhere near 7 , so am a bit snookered . Dont think they can cater for everyone . Just stand in the right pen and get dragged along with runners who are aiming for a similar finishing time . I hope to get somewhere near the back of the 1:30 to 1:45 pen .

See you there

Gah, I'm about 8.5. (Had to work it out, I don't base my training in miles at all)
