Getting to the Start from Washington

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of getting from Washington, Tyne & Wear, to the start. I was wondering if it's best to drive to the nearest Metro station and take the train from there.

I'm form Stanley Co Durham and Last year I parked in the cattle market carpark and walked up to the start
