Humph's Hilly Half

How Hilly?

How hilly is 'hilly'? This would be my second half marathon. I found the first one really tough despite all my training - the Robin Hood Half in Nottingham. That one wasn't even marked as hilly but it certinally wasn't flat. Any advice anyone - is this one suitable for my second?

None at all, but I'm considering whether to enter. If anyone can/will post an elevation profile of the route that would be very helpful. Thanks.

I just copied the route map from here:

in to bikehike.co.uk and it looks like there are two main hills each of around 200ft, one right at the start and one at around 7 miles.

I've done this one five years in a row and IMO it's not as bad as the title suggests. There are basically two main hills as JB3 states, the worst is over in the first mile and then there is quite a long drag at seven miles. Other than that I would describe it as no more than undulating. It is an extremely pleasant run through some glorious countryside on a Saturday evening which is why I drive up from Swindon for it, but certainly don't do it thinking you're going to get your best ever time. Hope that is of some use!

Hey
I'm interested in this event too!! Is it well marshalled?!
Cheers

ChrissiePud, in my experience it's a well-organised, well marshalled and well supported event, especially for a fairly small race. The first time I did it I had really bad chafing (too much info I know) and was in a lot of pain but got a lot of support from the marshalls in the last stretch. There's a good sense of camaraderie between the runners as well and you'd be surprised how many locals in the villages come out to cheer us on. Only downside is you pass a couple of pubs with beer gardens and I have to admit I've been tempted to stop for a pint..

Am gearing up for this one on Saturday. Shame it's an evening race, I don't tend to perform as well, not scared of hills though shame it's not a trail race, beautiful area this.

I LOVE this race....I have run every one with the exception of last year due to a stress fracture. This year I will be back!

Totally agree about there being two main hills, and I think it is a reasonably quick course, as the downs tend to be long so you can make up some time. It was my PB course until earlier this year.

I also think it is very well organised etc etc and the chappie (whos name I forget) who always does the banter before the start on a step ladder is BRILLIANT!

For infor - they also do a 1 mile race next month
