It got me there!

Thanks Chunky and all at DDR, enjoyed the race and catching up with a few familiar faces! A finish time of 1.20.43 beat my 3 week old PB by 1.01! Can't be bad!

Only thing that marred the day was being dragged away from the bar and off to the chaos of b+!**y Ikea,it was the last day of the sale. :(

Oh well, I did get an ice cream! :)

Nice one Puffy!!

Give my regards to your dad:-)
I don't get down the Halfway as much as I'd like to. Moomoo + rolling pin are keeping me in check.

So this course is about 180yds too long but before anyone from DRR starts to complain i shall be measuring others around the county this year !

So it looks like us official course measurers are going to be subject to "trial by GPS" from now on ! Remember we use pre-war technology to do the job - a Jones counter on a bike and a set distance measured with a steel tape. I have measured the courses for most of the local events including the Dartford 10, the Canterbury 10, the Ashford 10K and the Paddock Wood Half Marathon. We take the shortest line throughout and add on a safety margin of 0.1 % (which should be 17 yards extra for 10 miles). I would be interested to know how the other courses stand up to the GPS treatment.

I wouldn't worry too much about it Rob. My Garmin measured Sundays course as 10.2 miles.

It's only when the data is downloaded onto Tracklogs, where it overlays onto an OS map, that you can see how the discrepancy has happened. On mine for example there were several bizarre sideways spikes on the recorded route which are usually caused by reflected signals from buildings etc giving innaccurate readings.

Scotty , go back a page or 2 , it wasnt just Garmins that measured the course as over distance ?
19/01/2005 at 21:52
Does it matter? We all ran the same route after all.

I think the answer is that the course is measured by the shortest route but no-one actually runs the shortest route. You run a bit wider on corners for instance.

As Johnny J says if you consider going wide at corners, avoiding other runners, parked cars, pedestrians etc etc you would expect to actually run more than 10 miles in a 10 mile road race. I suspect you'll find your GPS device shows 1 - 2% above the race distance in other similar races as well. If it showed that you'd covered less than 10 miles instead then that would be a reason to worry!

I agree with Porcus, we all ran the same route - in a very well organised and enjoyable event - so what does it matter?

To the owner of the Mercedes sports parked between mile 3-4. I'd like to apologise for the footprints on your roof as I was worried about slipping to 498th place I couldn't go round! If it's any consolation I got a PB though! :)

Admit nothing, deny everything

We have just measured the North Downs Run 30K and last years course was just over 30K , this year will increase by either 46 metres or 100 metres - I dont think anybody will notice ....

Thanks Chunky & DRR for a very enjoyable race

King xc, I hope you've remembered to take into account the plate shift caused by the Tsunami?
21/01/2005 at 18:45
Dear King XC

I thought you said at the last meeting that the NDR course was going to be 10k longer and you hoped no one would notice.
