Garmin 301 help

Hello

My PC is not acknowledging the 301 when I connect the two together. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling etc with no luck. I keep getting the message to 'connect the device to the computer'. I think the problem is at the watch-end - could water, dirt, sweat etc block the 'connector bits'? Anyone had a similar problem that they've resolved?
