GPS Garmin eTrex 20 or would the 305 suffice?

Looking to enter The Pony Express ultra, and would like to be able to download the route. I know xnrg offer the route as a download, but are runners putting this onto a Garmin 305 or a gps unit with all the bells and whistles?

Would appreciate any advise

The 305 would only give you an indication of whether you should turn to the left or the right, and if you're as few as 10m off the plotted course it'll beep constantly.

An indication of left and right, beeping when I have gone wrong, is the measure of my navigational skills, so sounds perfect!

Thank you so much for the reply Intermanaut, you have saved me £179.99!

I have used my 305 on a couple of off road ultras, works pretty well as long as you follow the instructions and use it as a confirmation tool!

Although at one stage the path had become overgrown and I took a slight detour and then could not tell which way I should be running on the line, a couple of good circles and I found the path again!

But overall I will use it again as it is light and I would wear it anyhow.

I often put routes into the 305, yes all you see is a line but in conjunction with common sense and a map it is all I've ever needed.

Thanks for all the replies. On the back of this I have found a tutorial on YouTube. Feel slightly less anxious about getting lost in the New Forest now. Entry to The Pony Express is imminent.
