How close together can you run marathons?

I'm planning to run a marathon next year for the 'big 40'. I've run 4 half marathons and a hilly 20 miler this year. I'm unlikely to be able to give up the amount of time needed to train for a marathon after 2003. How many can I safely fit in to one year and how far apart should they be run?

Theres an article on here (somewhere) by Bruce Tulloh which recommends at least six weeks in between. I've also seen that recommendation from the race doctor of the Berlin marathon.

I think I'm right in saying that most of the elite only do at most 2 a year with about 6 months in between. Certainly thats what I've done but I know that other people on the forum have done them with less time in between, and could probably give you better advice
