I'm sick of running with my shoddy couple of programmed in radio stations walkman!

Need an mp3/ipod

I need one that won't skip or screw up
one that holds over 1000songs

is the nano a good option?

i have many questions
battery time...do you charge one like a mobile or have rechargeable batteries?

if the ipod/mp3 has a hard drive is it impossible to skip or die on you?

are these good to run with?

how many songs is enough?and what is the maximum!

so many questions!

Ipod shuffle

Brilliant

Charges from computer or from charger
Lasts for hours
Holds more songs than I know what to do with
Never skipped
light enough to stick in a pocket

I have a 'proper' ipod for general use, and a shuffle for running. They are perfect for running in my humble and honest opinion.

errm, why do you want it to hold 1000 songs? For running I suspect you'll want to pick out favourites and tracks that are at a certain pace. In which case maybe 200 songs is more than plenty (unless you are doing ultras!)

I have a Nano and a Shuffle. Both are great. I run with the Shuffle (got it before the Nano existed) - it's never skipped. I got the Sports Case to go with it - it's water resistant, so no problems in the rain (just tuck it under my shirt).

Yes a solid-state MP3 can die on you.....e.g. if you drop it in the bath, drive over it etc. But in normal use, it should be fine.

A hard-drive based mp3 has the definite potential to skip on you - my older 40GB ipod skips after about 20 minutes. having said that, it doesn't really skip it just kind of freezes and is really irritating until you stop moving for 5 minutes so that it can load its memory up from the hard-drive again.

Run with a solid-state one. If you must put everything on then a nano, but for just running with (where you don't really need fancy graphics, just play and run) then a shuffle is a good value option.

ps. only holds around 100 tracks but how much do you need really. I run ultras and it is good enough for a 4-5 hr run

Not sure running with headphones is a good idea for safety, but otherwise .... what Gobi said.

Mine is a Logika from Dixons, 256 megs, cheap as chips and probably semi-disposable but does the job fine.

I may be wrong, but I reckon that the innards of all these things are the same, the only difference is the packaging, branding and controls.

Innards of all ipods are white.

This makes a huge difference.

Just got an ipod shuffle from www.ebuyer.co.uk for bargain of £39.99. It was "reconditioned" product but it looks new to me. Plus they had about 50 left so not sure what is going on I love it. Really easy to run with. I just tuck it under my bra strap.

Hold ~90 songs.

The clearance ones have all gone but the full price ones are about £46 inc VAT

Consider a Creative Zen Nano +. The 1gb version is only £5 more than the 1gb apple shuffle, is solid state, has the benefits of a screen, able to play wma (So if you compress at 64 at wma it has the equivalent sound of a 128 mp3 with lower file sizes) allowing well over 500+ songs, is smaller than the shuffle - it fits in the key pocket of my running shorts, and plays for 18 hours on a single Duracell AAA or 12-14 hours on a rechargeable. So unlike the shuffle you don't need a computer or charger (an extra £18) if your battery dies on you - just an extra little battery.
Oh and the sound quality is great and comes with a radio built in, but consider getting some new earphones as the ones supplied are only average (In my opinion).

Just for the record I am a nano fan and I love it! Small compact and with 4GB loads of songs never to get bored with.

can you run with a nano??anyone know?!?

i'm not bothered about putting songs on just for running....just want loads of songs on something i can use for running and general use

nano with 1000 limit is the best option for me...anyone else run with one?

yes you can run with a nano.....I do.

bought a extrememac armband and wristband for approx £20. wouldn't even know the little bugger was on your arm, as armband is very comfortable.

bought both my nano and armband from advancedmp3players.co.uk, very good service, next day delivery.

One issue with the nano is that there isn't an equivalent to the shuffle's sports case. The sports case is, some say, waterproof - others say nearly. But there is a totally waterproof case for the shuffle on the market (good for triathletes):

http://www.waterproofmusic.com/shuffle.html

Nano cases all (and I'd love to be proved wrong) have a hole of some sort to access the jog wheel. So no running in torents of rain without a waterproof pocket/sandwich bag/risk.

Aparently a new, smaller Nano is in the pipeline...

I've got a non-brand 1G MP3 player with FM radio. Unfortunately it whacked against something in my bag and cracked the screen. Still works a treat but can't see it now, so have bought a new one off eBay - total £40. Not bad for 1GB, and if something goes wrong it won't break my heart (or the bank!). Best of both worlds - I can choose to listen to my songs or the radio. Stick in a rechargable AAA battery and yer off!

Dixons have a load of different 1GB ones for £39.99 at the moment, including a rather cute looking tiny cube. Not sure how that would fit in a key pocket though!
