Shoe choice?

Hi there,

have recently returned to running after some years off! Have tried varios shoes but have ended up wih the 'old reliables' Nike Pegasus.

I find that they are light weight and give excellent cushioning - but the problem is that this does not last. I run approximately 20+ miles/week (4 x 5, but the next day suffer with ankle and knee pain...any thoughts?

(I am 6' tall and approx 90 kilo's.)

Hi Damien - I would say: get yourself to a good running physio, so you can rule out anything that might cause long term injury.

hi Damien, i had the same trouble, i to am a heavy runner in terms of shoes and i settled a few years ago on Asics 2050, and the upgrades. the 2080 is their current offering and i pay around £65 if purchased by mail order.

I am a bit of a heavy runner. I have just done approx 350 miles in Pegasus with no problems, running approx 30 mi a week. Past two weeks have had a bit of knee pain. Nothing serious. Last night every footstep landed with a thud & could not bear it & packed up at 3mi. I think they have had it. I have another new pair of Pegasus to use but will give the Asics a go next time.

Thanks for that!

I will give the Asics a go, although I actually prefer the Nike brand...but if they help my running the Asics it is.

I like nike for kit but with shoes you can't really beat asics in my opinion.

Get yourself ASICS MC+ or their upgrade. Six footer over 14 stone myself. Always suffered from knee, ankle and hip problems. Tried Nike, Fils and Puma but still pain at times. Changed to Asics MC+ last year and pain is reduced. You may suffer from over pronation, see the section on choosing shoes.

Would recommend Mizuno Wave Creation for mileage training.Excellent cushioning.I'm on my second pair. Very smooth.
Also you can get the 2003 model MRP £90 for £60 from Sports Shoes Unlimited at the moment . That really is a great deal.Bear in mind that I am fairly neutral , 170 cm tall and weigh 9 stone.
Good luck mate.

Damien,

Have you had your running style looked at?

The pegasus are neutral trainers, for people whose feet dont roll inwards while they are running. If your feet do roll inwards, the Pegasus won't provide your feet with support against that, and this might be causing your pain.

Alternatively, when you say "old reliables" - how old are we talking about here!? might be worth checking out the mileage the shoes have done, and if its coming up to about 400/500 miles, they might be wearing out (especially if you land heavily?)
