Some socks are very expensive

but are they worth it?

I usually just wear trainer socks from a big old multipack but recently found myself with credit card in hand and a glint in my eye splashing out on a pair of socks that cost a whopping 8 pounds. They are left and right specific and I convinved myself that my feet felt better after a long run than they usually do but not sure if i was just trying to redeem myself for spending so much on a single pair of socks.

Any thoughts?

hee hee, i always try to make myself feel better about spending more on something you could get soo cheap somewhere else. not sure socks would really chang much but everything if worth a try

I bought my first pair of running socks when I bought my first proper running shoes.  I wouldn't go back to normal socks now.  I think proper running shoes and running socks go hand in hand.(or feet in feet)

Just a shame that they cost more.
I wear Hilly Marathon Fresh, £5.99 a pair.

I'm a huge fan of proper running socks and I think you get what you pay for.  I know some people have no problems with a pack of 10 from ASDA for 99p, but I have really skinny and bony feet with quite prominent ankle bones and for me it makes a huge difference to the running experience to spend a bit more on socks.  My favourites are Asics Kayano socks.

I am the opposite really, in my personal experience I find running socks a waste of money to be honest.  Maybe its my feet, or the socks I have bought, but I have not been impressed.  First of all there were 1000 mile socks, which gave me worse blisters, then I got some Thor low socks, which are fine, but I don't really see anything special about them.

To be honest, I just normally wear some sports socks from Tesco, I find them just as good.  I appreciate that everyone is different though, and some people must like them or there would not be such a market for them.

I really like Hilly Monoskins. I used to run in twin skins quite happily but then started blistering when I upped the distance. I like the padding of the monoskins and there are no seams at all to rub my toes, something I've struggled with in cheaper socks.

I agree with Clag, twin socks gave me blisters, 1000 mile were the worse.  I settled on Hilly Monoskins, Excellent will not use anything else now and are definately worth it.

I dont like twin sock things, and not keen on running in the thicker cheap sports socks. I wear the thinner cycling socks and they've always been fine for me. ALdi do some great sports socks from time to time too.

Proper running socks for me, I remember doing my first 10k in sports socks, and suffered like hell because of it, blisters on top of blisters etc etc.

I get the "run365" ones from JJB, £4.95 for 2 pairs, they feel so much nicer on my feet when running, plus they are really well ventilated, so I don't get sweaty feet.

Not had a single blister since I changed to them.

I use proper running socks as I find I have to to avoid blisters and general discomfort. I can recommend the ones Danowat mentions also.

I got some of the 'nike running socks' and they were expensive at 9.99 for two pairs, but they are incredibly comfortable to wear, very well ventilated and kept my feet dry.

after years of trial and error, mono skins for me. I'm too sweaty to wear regular socks.

They are worth it if you are prone to blisters. I think they do feel better, but i don't wear them all the time simply because i can't afford enough pairs to have that luxury. I do generally try to wear them for sessions and always for races . I have 2 pairs normal x socks, 1 pair of x socks compression socks and 1 pair of fox rivers which are more padded and i think underrated.

Them 'nike running' socks were brilliant during my human race run and kept me dry. Certainly worth the money when you been standing in the pouring rain for ages!!

Another vote for Hilly monoskins for me. Never run without and they've been fine for everything from a 10k to the MdS and they seem to last for ages.

Thorlos and Brigdale for me. I get burning feet if I wear thinner socks, even if they're wickable sports ones.

I keep hinting to Mr S that Falke are good, in the hope of a surprise pressie but none so far - why are men so carp at hints?

Hilly mono skins all the way! I wouldn't use anything else. Whaen I started out I used to wear trainer sock, but then paid the price for it when I started to up my distance's.......Ooohh my poor feet suffered, after trying Thorlos, 1000 mile amongst others I settled on Hilly's...perfect for me!

Forgot to say...worth every penny. Socks, like running shoes are a must have investment for every runner!

I have tried a few and x-socks are the best for me, shame since they are also the most expensive! they are not too thick and have the right amount of padding.
