Trail shoes on road surfaces

So I've just bought my first pair of trail shoes, and quite keen to break them in in Hyde Park/Wormwood Scrubs/etc in London but all these places are 1-2 miles away from me. Will it damage trail shoes to run there and back on road? Will it damage me?!

Depends on the shoe, some are comedy bad on road (kandadia trail) but others hold their own for a few miles or more. As for you.. trail shoes are less cushioned so they will feel firmer underfoot, depends on how you run if this will bother.

Thanks for the reply. The shoes in question are Saucony Grid Excursion 3 Trail (pretty low-end). I tried it out this afternoon, and it felt more or less OK. It just depends whether the tread on the shoes can take the punishment.

They look like they will tolerate road well. They are pretty much a road shoe with a more aggresive tread.

Sounds like you've answered your own question - I wear Salomon ones that sound similar (ie. rugged, heavy trainers that occupy that middle ground). If you're very heavy and will miss cushioning on the road, or a severe overpronator I'd try to limit how far you run on the road in them, but a mile or two should be fine.

why are the kanadias so bad on the road?

I'm not far off buying them!

I can quite comfortably get 4-5 miles on road in my Kanadias with no problems whatsoever!

Kanadias are ok on the road if it is dry, if the road is a bit greasy then they can get a bit slippy. Not such an issue when they are a bit worn.

As long as your shoes have some cushioning and/or your are not heavy footed then 1-2 miles should not be an issue.

Be fine!

My kanadia's are new, I found them quite slippy on tarmac, but apparently this improves with wear^^

I'm not sure trail shoes do improve on slippery surfaces with wear - my Asics Trabucos are still slippy on certain hard surfaces after many many miles of use. I think it's due to the lugs being raised which reduces surface contact and the harder compound - but in mud, grass etc they're fine....

I ran for about 6 miles on road before hitting the off road at the w/e and they were fine - but they are well worn in

Kanadia's aren't keen on wet sticky clay either.

I'm not sure there are any shoes that are keen on wet sticky clay!
