which garmin?

trusty old garmin on the blink

My garmin forerunner 201 is now playing up.  It won't turn off and only seems to respond to the reset button.  I suspect it is curtains for it.  My partner is brilliant at repairing things if he can get a spanner or a screwdriver to it but this i s'pose has a chip -

I'm thinking that I will have to replace it but with which garmin?  I find that like washing machines they have hundreds of programs but i only use two - d'you know what I mean.?

I suppose it makes sense to go with the latest model which brings me on to 'price' - yikes.  Where can i find the best deal?

It's weird but it felt very odd going out without it this morning - it has become part of the kit, i flick my eyes to it all the time to see pace, distance etc.  I'm feeling lost - help - never thought i would be so dependent on a gadget.

All help and advice gratefully received.

my vote would be the 305 if you want a GPS watch, or the 50 if you want a great sports watch.  Both are relatively cheap in comparison to the latest GPS-porn (ie the 405). I have both and use the for dif things/situations and love them both.  The favourite one is the 305 by a well measured country mile!

i have the 405+HRM and the 50 with footpod only.  i bought the 50 as i wanted the footpod to use with my 405 on the treadmill, but it was cheaper to buy the garmin 50 with the footpod.  the 405 is fantastic, and always improving via firmware.  the price has come down considerably since it first came out, just run a price check.

The 50 is a fantastic watch/HRM/speed/distance/bike computer.  It's not as accurate as a GPS unit for distances but it has advantages such as being waterproof and having a battery that will last the length of an Ironman.

Jbelly - I've just been told the 405 is going up to £249? And that's without the HR chest strap - where have you seen them?

This *may* be of use to someone whilst on the topic of Garmin! Cheap for a HRM and cheaper than buying the HRM on its own!

Before you do go and splash the cash, a quick phone call to Garmin technical help desk and you may be able to sort it all out with Hard Reset, or a software update. Worth a try for free.

spamalot - just google garmin 405 HRM.  amazon is £189.99. there's a fair few places you can get them under £200 now.

does the garmin 405 have the same features as the 305? I borrowed my friends garmin 305 recently and liked the features but it's just so big! (i have tiny wrists).

Are there any other differences I shoudl know about, other than the size and the price?
