Just went to treat self to a wicking New Balance long sleeved top with those thumb hole things to help keep little hands warm. They're £35 quid at Bournes sports shop.
Has anyone got one? Are they worth it? Can I get them cheaper? Should I stick to old Manics T-shirt and tolerate rubbed armpit area? Am I just a bit of a tight arse?

I really like my Nike dry fit tops & never run in anything cotton.
Although a Manics T-shirt is something else!

Helen,

Check an earlier thread a couple of days ago under gear on the new balance tops. They are 15 quid for the long ones and ten quid for the short sleeve ones from the new balance factory outlet. You will find the number for this on another thread which is next to the new balance top one.

I just ordered a couple for my dad to bring out to Turkey in two weeks time when he comes.

Hope this helps

Helen,

Have a look at the adverts in Runner's World but definitely get a wicking top. Once you have one you will never go back to cotton.

Are you doing Alsager? I've been off with my achilles so I shall have to give it a miss (in other words it's safe for you to go!).

Well worth the money, Ron Hill 'Marathon' tops are quite reasonable even from major outlets. £15 for short sleeves £20 for long.

As DavidB says, once you have run in a wicking top, it is difficult to go back to cotton. Looking through the adverts, you can pick them up fairly cheaply.

I'd never work out or run in a non-wicking top now. I sweat like a pig. (apologies to Wee Piglet)

Pity that most of the race tees are plain old cotton though.

I did all my FLM training in cotton t-shirts before discovering wicking tops. I still do short runs (3 or 4 miles) in cotton, just to save on the washing, but anything over that it's the wicking ones every time.

You can pick them up much cheaper than the RRP at things like the FLM expo, stalls at the big races (eg Reading), and occasional sales in the running shops.

Thanks everyone, I'll check out your suggestions.

DavidB -I am indeed doing Alsager, and am meeting up with a few forum lasses which should be great. Shame you won't be there so I can put a face to the name! I'm expecting to be last, but don't care as it's a big achievement for me.

Big Tim, I wear the Manics stuff to run as I secretly suspect I'm too old and decrepit to wear them in real life: would hate to pass for 18 from a rear view til I turn around......

I seem to recall that in a Marathon guidebook my wife got me only lst year, it recommended cotton tops for running. I think it was the Liz McColgan one ?

Once you try the wicking tops - you won't go back to cotton. (and they dry so much quicker too - so you need less kit !)

(Hmmm, Helen T and a few forum lasses; just how bad is my Achilles?)

Apart from drying twenty times quicker than cotton they do not need ironing and are virtually impossible to crease. This makes them ideal for suitcase packing for casual holiday wear. The same applies to fleece tops.
