I did international history & politics as a degree. Main interest would be inter war years and particularly from the end of Weimar/wall street crash to 1945

It's a really great period to study. If you have time spare in Berlin - I can strongly recommend a visit to one of the concentration camps or a museum about the holocaust/war period. The Germans have really handled it very well and sensitively.

That may well make my list for the Monday.

I bought a German history book but the years from 1939-1945 just had 'Holidaying in Poland' ....

I actually took a course on "holocaust humour" during my degree. It was to show how humour was used by normal germans to counter the rationing/imprisonment. It was really interesting...

Hello all,

Got a place for the Berlin marathon and registered today. Also ordered a finishers t-shirt, hopefully I will earn it. Thinking of going Friday to Monday to get in a bit of sightseeing.

Thought it was about time that I stepped up from doing a number of halfs. I have also got a place for Brighton next year.

welcome to the thread, Luke! Have you sorted out your accommodation and flights? Where are you flying from?

I'm going: Saturday morning - Monday evening

07/11/2012 at 13:38

Hi Luke

Ditto Friday to Monday. Don't do too much sightseeing on the Saturday - it can be exhausting

07/11/2012 at 13:49

Emmy - I haven't booked accommodation or flights yet. Can anyone recommend anywhere to stay?

Orbutt - I think Saturday will be a relaxing day with a little sightseeing and carb loading!

Then a party on Sunday I am also joining Luke in Berlin, stepping up from a half marathon so will be a big challenge.

@Luke - have a look at Booking.com and see what's around. As long as you're near a s/u-bhan - you'll be ok. I'm staying in Kreuzberg as it's cheaper

FLIGHTS AGAIN

Just received an email from Lufthansa about my flights. Now, not only have they changed my outbound flight to go via Frankfurt, they have done the same for the return

I'm not too bothered about the outbound leg but the return would have been a pain.

As previously mentioned there is still a direct flight from Manchester to Tegel - Outbound is a 20.05 depature (23.05 arrival) - Return 18.30 (arrive 19.25)

I've just phoned Lufthansa and they changed my return flight to the direct one without any problem.

Lufthansa have emailed.  The direct flights now seem to be replaced with going via frankfurt and returning via Dusseldorf!

DLR - see my previous post

07/11/2012 at 21:29

DLR, Orbutt - sorry to hear about the Lufthansa trials... They altered my flights too but I was alwaysgoing via Dusseldorf. Btw, not a bad airport to fly through. At least they'll be on time - unlike TD's easyjet experience this year...

I haven't heard from loserthansa yet...hopefully they won't stuff around with heathrow to berlin.  That'd be pretty mad!

07/11/2012 at 23:43

RS - I think you're safe. A direct from one 'major' European capital to another... It should be no issue.

Still can't believe you've a cleaner!

(COI - I decided last year I couldn't afford to continue paying my one...!)

Cheers Orbutt.  I'll have a think about what to do.

Leave as is - Dusseldorf sounds ok, and gets me back to Manc land for late morning still...but still means being at Tegel by 7.00 ish.

Change to evening - means an extra day in Berlin to do the tourist stuff and no early start...but means carrying a big rucksack round all day and possibly killing time at Tegel.

What's Tegel like?

08/11/2012 at 06:29

Tegel is awful!

I could always help you store your rucksack for the day, if that helps??

We don't fly back until the Tuesday.

So do I Kaz!
