Do you puke?

Do you or have you ever puked, or been sick after running?

I did 8.8 miles today. One of my longest training runs.

An hour and a half later I was very nearly sick. If it hadn't been for a quick exit from Tesco's I am sure I would have added to the color scheme at the check out.

I am baffled as this is a first for me. What can cause this? Is this common? Has this happened to you?

Damian.

PS. On the upside, by girlfriend had to get the bill!!! LOL

Yes, it doesn't happen much now but did quite often after short(ish) high intensity runs

Not sure what causes it - ask one of the docs on here

Never in training, but a few times at the end of races. I put it down to all the blood going to places where it will be useful in the final made efforts, and the poor old stomach feeling left out.

In my student days I was known to chunter on the way to races on occasion. (A combination of liquid preparation and the traditional pre-race greasy fry up.)

Puking following exercise is the body's response to stress (physical exertion). It's associated with training that goes into the anaerobic realm and a build up of lactic acid is considered one of the causes of it.

Stopping fairly suddenly after vigorous exercise can also trigger it. At the end of your interval or race, keep moving. Don't stop. That will help keep your heart pumping, the blood flowing, and flush out some of the lactic acid build up. At the end of your workout it will also help your body adapt to a more static state.

Always felt very rough at the end of my school cross country races, and was amazed at how easy it must be for those at the front as they always looked so fresh when I got to the end.

One day I dropped out because of a very bad blister and was on a loop near the finish, so I was able to see the winners finish.

The first guy broke our school record (we took cross country very seriously) and vomitted as he crossed the line. His twin brother came next, again beating the old record and he was very nearly sick. Our school's first finisher came next, just outside the old school record, but with the fastest ever time for someone from our school, and he vomitted as he crossed the line. Five minutes later when I would normally have finished they all looked fine.

I've never heard of the urge to vomit being delayed for an hour and a half though. I often have coughing fits a few hours after a hard run. Wonder if the body's convulsions are similar?

The only times I've been sick are (weirdly) when I've not eaten enough to sustain the amount of exercise I'm doing, or where I've eaten before cooling off completely.

Also agree with Siance - if I ever stop straight after a race I feel horrendous - I often walk about for half an hour afterwards to make sure I've cooled off properly, then I'll eat something. Eat too soon and I'll just throw it straight back up again.

I too have been sick while running, but during a race. I put it down to it being 32 degrees and the fact the whole 10k was up hill. It's interesting to see i'm not the only one!

Felt sick during running, but not actually puked, coincided with increasing my pace.

Did puke straight after boxing once - six 3-min rounds of total anaerobic hell..

At uni during an all out VO2 max test, my fellow students puked after it. I didn't. I put it down to forcing myself to do a delirious "cooldown" much to the amusement of my mates. Instead I was very very pale!

Done the whole pasty faced cold sweat shaking thing at the end of a run, but never actually puked!

Have been sick during running, then 2 hours later, put it down to the fact I hadn't had enought to drink that day. We were on holiday at the time and were out touring Skye in the car. Had a couple of cups of tea, then a couple of shortbread biccies with a coffee when we stopped for a break. Went straight out for a run when I got back. Was okay for the first 20 mins then had the urge to vomit. Was slightly sick. Felt a lot better continued on with my run. Drank a couple of glasses of water. Felt awful when I had a shower lay down on the bed, then just as father in law went for his shower I got the urge to puke again, threw up in a carrier bag out of cottage window. Poor hubby, mum in law and father in law got my daughter for the rest of the evening as I felt sick and had a headache. They put it down to a tummy bug, I knew it wasn't have done it before when I have not had enough to drink and or eat. Lesson learned always have a bottle of water with me now.

I was actually sick on sunday, about 1 1/2 miles into a gentle 5 miler. I know it was the fact that I'd just eaten boatloads of porridge though, and luckily there was no-one around to witness the event!

All very interesting. Maybe it was lack of food for me. I had planned to have a muffin when I got home, but was so pleased to actually be getting out running, that I completely forgot.
I did have a Lucozade gel bar half way through the run.
This is only the second one I have had, so wonder if it was that. I was fine after the last one I had.
We will see what happens this Sat when I do my longest ever training run - 10 miles.
I am glad to know that puking is perhaps an "accepted" part of the running experience.

I occasionally feel really nauseous about half an after my long runs. I find that if I force myself to eat something, the nausea usually goes away.

No idea what causes it. It's certainly not every long run, just occasionally. But could be due to not drinking enough, or maybe not eating enough before hand for the extra effort. (Sometimes on a Sunday I'll have breakfast, but by the time I've done all my 'jobs', seen to the horses, walked the dog etc its nearly lunchtime by the time I run and I'm running on empty again.)

That should have been 'half an hour'.
