Hi All

Not that I didn't expect it to already be full up, but had a tentative look and it's 34 quid to enter!! Just wondering, what do all the big events cost to enter roughly? Done the GSR 4 times before, but the last one was a few years ago.

Oh well - will enter the Cabbage patch instead, 18 quid with a long sleeved T shirt...looks like a bargain!

I won't pay that sort of money for a race.

There are, as you have found, plenty of other races which are much more reasonable.

I've just entered a French 20k (t-shirt included) for €10

Dior probably.

They have them in several sizes, from past experience, although this race only has one style.

And the small ones are actually, well, small

Rip-off.

Grand Union Canal - £30 if you have a support crew, £50 if you dont. Ok you dont get a t-shirt, but cost per mile is pretty cheap (between 20 adn 30p!)

You do get a very unique medal though if you are one of hte lucky ones to finish.

What race are you talking about there Nick?
16/06/2009 at 16:05

GUCR - probably the best value race ever! Its like an all you can eat buffet with a race too!! You would love it Jimo!!! Stuff your face with cakes and such like.

Isnt the GSR 10 miles?

Don't see what the fuss is about?

done by the same peeps Jimo who did the compton downland challenge - which i seem to recall you did?

ok, so GSR is £34 = £3.40/mile. I agree it seems quite steep.

21000 entrants, so thats in the region of 700k from entry fees. Consider that there will be companies begging to sponsor this event too.....it really does seem very expensive, but perhaps I am being naive?

I sure did Nicky boy, not the 40 miles though.

Right just about to check, thank you dude.

16/06/2009 at 16:14

He he he, that looks like fun. Is it on next year?

16/06/2009 at 16:15

...ah Jimo....its been soooo many years since anyone called me Nicky......makes me chuckle!

And yes I imagine it will be on next year. If you fancy a challenge Jimo enter the Ridgeway race over the August BH weekend. Give you a taste for something a bit different! Google trail runners association.

And if you want uber-cheap, and food and countryside - Long Distance Walkers Association! Self navigated, but makes a real change!

It's simple supply and demand economics.  GSR is run by a company who want to make as much money as possible and they can sell all the paces at £34 so they do.  If you don't like it then I suggest supporting your local running clubs who organise races on a voluntary basis, only charging enough to cover their costs or sometimes to raise money for charity.

Agreed - I didn't want to go to the 'if you don't like it' etc etc.. but it's a shame its so expensive

I know the t-shirts are quite nice, but from what I remember you get an apple and a bottle of water..big wow!! very corporate, but there you go.....

Mass participation events:  running for people who don't really like running.

Wilkie
where do you find out about French races?  I like the sound of that as a nice long weekend away.

I used to think GSR was a great race,  nice course with great pb potential but at £34 i'd not go near it now.

True Jaffa..

Feel like it was a great race, but now it's been sort of stolen away? perhaps that not the best way to describe it...funny huh...

I have entered again this year, having sworn never to run it again after the fiasco the year before last (the first year with stewards on the common taking the £3 parking fee, and not letting us off the common after the race for over 2 hours.) I agree that the £34 is a rip off and I will never run it again. This will be a pity as I have run it practically every year, including the very first when it started in southampton. I don't really know why I entered it this year, as I am not a fan of these large field races.
