Here's one to throw out to you all: how many marathons a year is a good idea and how many is completely insane? Seems to me many of you do more than a couple, but surely you'd spend half your time tapering. Any opinions?

And now for a serious answer - not more than two.

Whaddya mean, how many a year? I've done one every 21 years, I think that's enough (and due another this year)

Two - one spring and one autumn. I might consider more when I'm older but not run them as races - go somewhere like Rome / Barbados and run as long runs.

When I was a teenager 20 years a ago I did the Inverclyde marathon 3 years in a row....after a long absence, I did Loch Ness Dublin and Luton last Year..... Im hooked again and this year, Ive gone completly bananas. As well as all the 10kms and 1/2s that are in my area, Im planning to do 10 Marathons 1 Duoathlon (Corrieyairack) and depending on how I feel later in the year I'll consider the 2 Bridges 35mile Ultrathon.
Paris,Rotterdam,Lochaber,Belfast,Prague,Leiden,Edinburgh,LochNess,Amsterdam,Luton. Ive done the first two and feeling good. Enjoying a weekend rest before next week at Lochaber. I would of thought 10 was a lot until I met people in Luton last year some who were in the 100 marathon club and some who had done over 500 marathons one guy did almost 1 a weekend albeit @ 5hrs. Keep on running .......EEyin

I would say 2 if you plan to race them hard. As many as you want if you use them for training runs- how else could you get to be a member of the hundred marathon club.

Marathon hippo

Like Minique says i only race perhaps 2 or 3 a year.
I train fairly regularily and do a run of 12 miles plus every weekend all that happens is when a marathon approaches I just throw on a couple of longer runs a couple of weeks before.

It took a long time to get myself fit but now I am there I try to keep it going.
I have a really physical job that helps maintain my cardio-vascular sytem as well.
The only problem is I do try to pretend Im not injured and try to run them off as I dont like sitting arond.
This just came and bit me in the A**e at the flm as the niggly hamstring I have been trying to pretend wasnt there for a month finally made me grind to a halt and left me witha time an hour slower than normally expected.

It is not everyones cup of tea but I am lucky that I seem able to bash myself to bits week in week out without too much damage.
Saying that watch this space in a year!!!!
