I read Pfitzinger & Douglas as a first-timer and I'm glad I did. OK, I didn't follow the 70+ miles/wk schedule (!) but I think even for a first timer, the detailed low-down on the different types of marathon training and physiological explanations for what's going on are invaluable.

Would also recommend Bob Glover's Competitive Runner's Handbook.

As someone who has never bought a running book I have just bought 'The Competitive Runner's Handbook'. Will let everyone know what I think of it in a few weeks time.

I would recommend Hal Higdon's books, since reading his and following his training plans, I now run a 3:24 marathon beating my first marathon time by 48 mins!
