Race report: St Albans 10K (Excellent race very well run will do it again next year).

I take my own advice I posted on here only last week....started near the back of the crowd. Good idea as it makes you start out slower and get into the race gradually right? Yeh, except about 800 meters in I stupidly though "hmmm, going a bit slow for that amazing time I really want to set". So I sped up.

Now this was fine on the way out...noticed we were going downhill more than up but pah! Go for it Chris! Running really well, beautiful day....

......was going fine running passed people up until about 6k when I realised my mistake. Oh dear.

By 7k I was feeling bad...horribly sick bad. The downhills I enjoyed at the beginning of the race were turning into uphills. Steep horrible uphills! Stopped to walk for 20 secs....felt ok again and carried on until the next big hill and then again had to stop. RULE 1 - Always start out slower if you don't know the course as it may have hills you aren't used to!!!

Walked again for another 20 secs at 8k and 9k. Oh dear oh dear....Still got myself started and got to the 400 meters to go sign and thought, right lets go for it. I remembered at the start there was a hill we needed to go up so thought I'd be ok sprinting down it. At 400 meters to go I couldn't see the finish so also forgot there was a 100 meter uphill bit right at the end. RULE 2 - Don't start sprinting to the end unitl you can see the finish line!!

Anyway came in at 50mins (previous best was 56mins set in March) so did what I wanted....just a really really hard way!!

CP31, wow, sounds like your dedication was your saviour there!  Well done for getting round and in such a good time too while feeling rubbish.

 

My last run - 3 miles, intervals, treadmill, boring.

0.8 miles, had to pull up and get a lift home due to a niggly groin, before it became more than just a niggle, very annoying

Just 2 miles on the treadmill tonight.  Too painfull to run slow and too hot in gym to run fast.

Out at 6am today for 5.2 modestly paced miles round the Marina & up the beach - of course!  Breezy, refreshing, with the dull rumble of the tide competing with raucous gulls on the wing.

Ask me why I run early.....

Swittle - that sounds much nicer than my run tonight.

11miles at about 8:45 mins pace on a typical Irish summer's evening. So it was cold and windy with horizontal driving rain and hail for about 5 miles until it cleared up. Wasn't much better after though.

7 miles with running club last night, about 8 min mile pace with efforts thrown in too. calfs hurting but was very good

Thanks, Redjeep!  I think I caught up on the rain & wind factors this morning: another 6am start saw me drenched by squalls and buffeted by rate NE winds but I still managed a mile or so of beach in my 5.2 total before tackling the storm head on

Much calmer & drier today at 6am, so down the beach and through Rimrose Valley Country Park.  5.2 miles.

Sluggish today and a blooded toe to boot!

10km at 5:30/km....only my 3rd run in a lot of years since starting a couple of weeks back so I'm happy.....PB's every time I go out at the moment but will plateau soon.

3m yesterday along the canal towpath in my dinner break  -  bluebells and sunshine.  Last run before tomorrow's half marathon.

Great run for me this morning.  11.2 miles cross country across hilly, difficult terrain with a friend.  Took a long time (2h 12) with lots of interesting diversions, like a lost dog, bluebells, scrambling up hills and getting stuck in mud.  But challenging and great fun

first run for a week due to illness/workload. nipped out after work for a Regent's Park, Primrose Loop, roughly 10k at 5.30m/km

@nessie on another forum, someone was looking for a friendly club in the Epping Forest area, so I've sent him to the Orion Harriers...make sure you are as nice as I have promised!

Another 5-miler at 6am, this time to Crosby, Blundellsands, Waterloo RFC, and over to the beach before heading home.  Calm, cool, dry - ideal!
