It is quite tough but I really want to get that 3 hour mark on a Marathon and if I do the mileage now by the time the Belfast starts I can start building on my time.
Make sure you have a good go at giving up the fags, in a years time youll ask yourself 'why didnt I give up earlier'.

Hi Sorneeze, thanks for dropping a line.
I have heard the Mournes in Newcastle 'Tullymore' are very nice.
I have only lived in NI for just over a year so I may take a trip over in the spring/summer next year.
Do you know of any X/C running events around that time although I havent done a fell run yet.

James have you tried www.niathletics.org, it has a very comprehensive fixture list.

I admire your training times, I am sure you can get a good time this May Day, especially with the new supposedly faster marathon route.

I did it as my first marathon this year (I live in Belfast) and finished in just over 5 hours. I'm hoping to stay below that mark this year.

Thanx Jape
I have only started properly getting into running, even when I was training for the 2004 Belfast Marathon, I didnt enjoy it and didnt give 100% effort, but this year I am really enjoying it.

The only reason I did the Marathon is because the office was doing a relay and being a jack-the-lad or big-mouth, I said I'll do it all, without realising the true extent of the feat.

I finished 333rd in 3:44 and my Half-Marathon in Larne 101st 1:44

Thanks for the NI athletic. website but I already have it.
I have a printout of the list on my fridge with the events I'm doing highlighted.
It doesnt have any runs in Newcastle Co.Down if you hear of any please let me know.

Are you planning to run 2005 Belfast Marathon?
22/12/2004 at 14:19
Hi James just droped in to see how your thred was going glad to see you are still training hard. It makes it easier if you have a goal to aim for. See you on Monday you'll be glad to know its only 4.5 miles and not 5.5 miles
22/12/2004 at 16:33
Thanks Kenny.
I have 8 miles to do tonight which I'm gonna take easy, the front of my feet began to feel a bit sore on monday, I think the cushioning on my trainers is starting to go, I have had them since January and I have done some running in them!

What time will the run be on monday?
Oh and a quick question, are you doing the Glenariff run on Jan 1st, its at 13:00 I think, are you going to register on the day?
22/12/2004 at 16:53
James it's quite likely that your trainers have lost their cushioning after using them for nearly a year.

As for the Belfast Marathon, I might actually consider it although I was also thinking about Dublin. I am back after injury to doing around 15 miles per week in total and I think it would be a good basis to start to build up from. (plus a mate was keen to run it too)

Do you do any speedwork and if so, what?

Race starts at 11.00 on Monday, entry fee £3. Sales also start on Monday if you want a new pair of trainers, that is if Santa doesn't bring you a pair. I'll enter Glenariff on the day.

Anybody interested in fell running should contact the Northern Ireland Mountain Running Association. They can give you plenty of advice, fixture lists and training days. There is a fell race over the Mournes but it is a very serious two day affair.Bit too much for me i'm afraid. I might do the Glenariff myself if the Knees hold together. If you pass a middle aged, overweight and balding fella who looks in a lot of pain, say hello - it's probably me. Tell santa to bring you Inov8's- They are brilliant.

Hi Jape, I will definately need a new pair of running shoes in the new year, I was looking at mine this morning after a 6 miler and they look as though sonic the hedgehog had them for a few weeks :D
As for they cushioning, I cant even remember what it feels like to have a bit of bounce in a trainer!
A friend of mine did the Dublin Marathon and he said the crowds and orginisation of the event were 1st class, I might consider it aswell.
What sort of training schedule do you have at the moment?

Morning Sorneeze, hows things?
I dont think my missus will let me go away for a 2 day event :)
I'll have a look at that site but I have never done a fell race before and I dont know if I'll be any good, do you need fell running shoes?

See you there Kenny, I have'nt a clue what I've got for Xmas but I dont think Angela would have got me trainers.
I'm really looking forward to tomorrow its our 1st christmas together in our own house.

You might have noticed that I only post notes mon-fri between 9am-5pm which means I must use a pc at work.
I'm off work until January 4th.
So I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
God Bless.

Hi James Hope you had a nice xmas - In the Mournes you need fell shoes for stepping out the car. Get up there and have a go. When it comes to fell races, who gives a toss about being good, just have fun. It's funny, my wife can't wait to get rid of me for two days....

Hello from Lisburn - I'm not training for anything in particular at the moment but might try the Belfast Marathon. If I haven't frozen by then, early morning runs this weather are no fun!

Happy New Year everyone.
I hope everyone had a nice Chrsitmas.

Anyone do the 'Race Over The Glens' in Glenariff?
It was my first 5.5miles X/C and I was quite happy with my time of 46mins.

The boxing day turkey trot on the 27th was a 4.8 mile run which was difficult after all the Miller and Plum pudding consumed, but I finished in 34mins

I bought a new pair of Nike Pegasus for 50 pound after trying on about 10 pairs of trainers in Bishops Coleraine duri, The department manager 'Ronnie' didnt seem to mind and was very helpfull, he measured my feet and I found out my left foot is half a size bigger than my right!!!
I took my new Pegasus out for a 10 miler last night and I was comfortable throughout the distance and did it in 1hr 13mins.

Hi Taz and Lisburn runner doing any races this year?
04/01/2005 at 09:35
Morning all, and best wishes for new year. Good to see many people on this thread.

James, am only doing around 13-15 miles at the moment as I only have time for about 3 runs per week. (hard to combine with work and evening classes!) I expect this will increase, but I'd like to do some speedwork as well and start it earlier than last year.

Do you have any suggestions as I would like to get a bit faster..

hi all,

I'm moving back to Belfast in a couple of weeks and am a keen runner. Main races for me next year are FLM and IM Switzerland. Although I will do he Belfast M as well (but very slowly).

Currently doing about 60-65 miles per week.

Have to be honest I was pretty worried about the running scene at home (given my mum keeps going on about how crap it is compared to England), but that website does have quite a few races.

Are there any good running clubs around South belfast ?

Jape, I'd forget about the speed work, you will just get injured and get tired, just run lots and lots of slow miles (<75% max HR)... Its working for me.

hello everyone back there in norn irn. I went to school in Coleraine up til 1988 then moved to England - living in Portsmouth now. Got into running about 4 years ago and regularly compete in 10ks, and the occasional 5, 10 miler and half marathon. There are loads of 10ks round here so I always have a training objective. Training now for Stubbington 10K, en route to the Reading half in March.

My folks live in Lisburn so I might see some of you out plodding later in January (i'll be over for a few days).

cheers!
