Pacing Elite Runners

Do they need it ???

So there's a debate on whether Paula Radcliffe should be paced by men.I diagree with pace makers, elite runners don't need them, they know what pace is required for records and they're paid enough appearance money. In several races the pace makers are usually several metres down the road.I remember New York one year when the pacemaker built up such a lead because no one would stay with the pace he was asked to set, that he went on to win the race much to the annoyance of the second runner,he thought he had won.

I'm sure they do need them because pacemakers have been an integral part of record attempts (track and road) since records began. That's why it's relatively rare to get records at the Olympics and other championship events.

I think that's partly because at the Olympics and stuff no-one wants to risk going out too hard for a record and running out of steam, thereby blowing chances of an Olympic medal.

I do however think they need pacemakers - why would the organisers bother shelling out for them if they didn't make any difference?

also remmeber the effect of running in someone's slip-stream, that little bit less wind resistance can make the difference between hitting a world record or just missing it

that's why Paula Radcliffe wants a male pacemaker - she can tuck in behind him for most of the distance - as opposed to a much shorter distance that a female pacemaker could offer.
