I went to Holmes Place gym today on a guest pass. When I got there I had to wait in reception for my friend to sign me in - while I was there about 15 people in sportswear left.

Where were they going? They were going for a run!

What the hell is wrong with these people. Effectively they are paying their monthly fee to use the lockers & showers

They must be bl**dy nice lockers :o/

I couldn't even get the 2 I tried to lock. They take a padlock but you could still open it with the lock on.

The only good thing about the gym was that they gave you towels

Perhaps on other days they use the gym equipment?

It's because running on the road is more effective than running on treadmills.

more money than sense, some peops:oz

It's one day. I find it difficult to criticise people doing the exercise. They may also be using the other facilities (swimming pool as the timetables at teh local baths are poor?)

Well done them for getting up and doing something rather than sitting on their backsides.

They're probably being paced round by someone from the gym. Maybe.

Maybe their employers pay for their membership.

The neighbour does something similar. Pays a small fortune for gym membership, and drives there to use the cycle treadmills (spinners, is that what they're called?).

I suggested that she dump the gym and buy a bicycle.

I used to do this. I used to go to gym 3 times a day and only use the gym at lunch. The morning and evening visit was to meet up with runners go for run and a quick sauna after!

Madness I know but it was more of a social thing, oh and they had a bar so we used to reward ourselves afterwards!

Bog Trotter has got it right, I think you'll find that most people that use Holmes Place have some corprorate deal whereby their employer pays for the fee otherwise the place would be empty! I've just become a member of Holmes Place but only because the boss has coughed up! Only used it so far to have a shower after I cycle into work (the gym is across the road from the office) and after a lunchtime run around Hyde Park.

£60? You must be from the shires squire!Monthly fees are over £100 here in the smoke!!

I thought this was a thread about getting paid £60 per month to run outdoors

I do this as well - nowhere to change/shower at work, so I go to the gym and sometimes can't be bothered to use the treadmill (boring) so go outside. I use fitness first though, so only pay £30 per month to use the lockers!
06/10/2005 at 09:56
I do that, but then do a session in the gym after followed by a swim and sauna!

£100 a month for a soddin' gym? Or even £60?

More money than sense, whoever's paying for it.

It is Mayfair old chap and don't talk about my boss like that, that's my job!
06/10/2005 at 10:31
Go to the local council gym (if there's any) 20p for a locker, and you get your 20p back when you finish

06/10/2005 at 10:36
Wouldn't want to use the gym if you paid me £60/ month, they're full of caricatures.

I used to belong to a Holmes Place in London before I was brave enough to run outside. Many of them have a "running club" twice a week where an experienced runner guides outdoor newbies round circuits of various lengths all beginning and ending at the gym. I never bothered myself as I prefer to run in the morning but I think it's a good introduction to real running and was often suggested by instructors as an alternative to the treadmill. I never knew of anyone who joined just to run and use the showers and lockers though.
