Prizes in races

What happened to mine?

I ran Dewsbury 10k on Sunday and to my surprise, when I checked the results, I found that I was eligible for the 3rd L40 prize.

This was due to the fact that although I came 4th in my category, the lst L40 was eligible for an open prize. It clearly states in the race information that in this situation an extra vets prize is freed up. I have e-mailed the race organisers but no luck.

I wouldn't mind but the same thing happened to me at Wilmslow (and that was a £75 Asics voucher) and Buxton last year! So, where do these prizes go? I have never believed myself to be the sort of runner to win a prize and therefore the thought of attending the prize giving does not even occur to me.

caterpillar girl, well done your placing for the Dewsbury 10k.

I never win prizes but often attend prize giving especially if there is sandwiches/cakes with tea and coffee, great to chat to fellow runners compare race experiences.

It is only tuesday hardly time for the organisers to send out the prize to you.

It is great isnt it when you dont get prizes very often.. to discover you have won something ? I sometimes get a vet 40 (this year to be vet 45 ) 2nd or 3rd prize if I go to a small race in the middle of nowhere and all the really good runners have found a high profile race else where LOL !!!

I hate you all <wanders off to look at his empty trophy cabinet>

I'm sorry. my bad experience at Wilmslow may have clouded my judgement but an acknowledgement of my e-mail would have been nice.

I just about get away with the time away from my family spent running so I'm afraid attending a prize giving is out of the question although it would be nice to meet and chat to fellow runners.

Well done caterpillar girl! I knocked 2 mins off and finally got sub 60 at Dewsbury!

Yes I think it would have been nice for you to get an acknowledgement of your email. As you say some of the prizes are monetary or vouchers which would really help financially.

I am going to keep running till Im 70. Then I am going to enter races with 50 competitors and finally get a veteran prize :-)

The last prize I won was on a very hilly half marathon in the back of beyond, I had attended the prize giving just for the cakes, hot choc, and chat, and was in the middle of pulling my running tights up when my name was caused, nearly went @rse over t*t , had a nice bottle of red wine.

CG - well done on your place, hope they sort you out!

The nicest looking award I ever won is from the South London judo championships of 1982 (bronze medal).

Pogo Patterson from Grange Hill won a silver, but he was in a higher weight category than me. :)

It does appear a shame that you have missed out on the prizes. If runners are not at the prize giving you would hope the organiser would forward the prizes on shortly after.

However, apart from the first time, now you know that you may possibly win a prize I think you should be prepared to attend the prize giving out of courtesy to the organisers. Or at least ask in advance what they would do if you weren't there to collect a prize.

CG do you belong to a club ?

If a member of our club wins a prize and misses the presentation, there is usually some else from the club there that will collect it and it is given out on club night.

There are loads of people who arent there to collect their prizes and usually not because they dont expect them but because they have to get home as CG says.

I always go to the prizegiving. Mainly because the bar is usually somewhere nearby ;-)

congratulations caterpillar girl!
i think with vouchers they do normally post them out, i'm surprised they didn't from wilmslow.
with other items you can normally arrange to collect them (may be difficult if you aren't local). i won a bottle of champagne last summer and a very nice man rang to tell me and then brought it to another race we were both doing the following week
maybe contact them again if you don't hear anything more after a week or so

Nightnurse - Funny image in my head of you falling over your tights!! Don't think anyone else from my club attended and I'm not shown as a club runner in the results (which was also something I raised in my e-mail).

And well done you stoxy on that PB.

it being tuesday they might've just not reached you yet, or maybe no-one's checked the email yet? club volunteers are likely to be quite busy after races (and before too) - might be worth following up in a week or so to allow plenty of time for them to get to you.
'tis good getting a prize when you don't expect it. I got a proper trophy for TLD :)

A slightly different slant on this.

I still have a number of trophies that my, now antipodean based, daughter has won over the years. Some of them obviously fairly old and therefore valuable.

I've written to clubs and organisers offering to return them at my own expense if provided with an address.

So if anyone is wondering where they're Senior ladies trophy has got to, and the results sheet shows the name Emma Frost or Emma Howard at the top, its probably on my sideboard. Drop me an email....

Oh and well done CG. Don't forget to write to the Totley Club mag editor and get your name in the next edition.

What's a prize??
06/02/2007 at 15:52
Dunno Muzz. Glad you asked - I thought it was just me.

Also CG don't forget that the race organisers have full-time jobs too.

My dad used to run for Dewsbury Road Runners so I used to know Bernard the organiser and last I knew he was a solicitor (legal type!!) so he does have a quite demanding job.

I'm sure they will be in touch soon.

Also nearoly forgot, WELL DONE YOU for coming fourth in you category.

I once won cub scout of the year when I was 11 years old, Still got the trophy. 34 now and hanging on to my youth.!!!!!!!
