Rave Run - Baldock Bypass

Unique running experience

Quite a unique run I did this morning.

The Baldock bypass is near completion...this is a 4 mile bypass which tunnels through the Hertfordshire chalk hills bypassing the historic market town of Baldock.

As it hasn’t opened yet I thought to myself....why not run it?

And what a great run it was too. The brand new dual carriageway was empty (except for the odd workman – who all gave me very peculiar looks)

It’s quite a weird feeling....I think I maybe the first person to run the Baldock Bypass!!

If anyone else wants to do this run then you will need to be quick....apparently the road opens lunchtime Thursday 16th Mar!

LOL!!!

I live a couple of villages along from Baldock and have been watching with interest as the bypass nears completion. But I would never have considered running along it!!! Nice one Maca Lad!

About 25 years ago (during my first running era)I was living in Hertfordshire and ran on Christmas morning along a 10 mile length of the unopened M25. I was probably faster than when I now sit on it in my car in the rush hour.

How long is the tunnel ?Sounds fun !

I thought the tunnel would be at least half a mile long...but it is probably only 300 - 400 metres. Bit dissappointing really....although still quite eerily quiet!

10 mile run on the M25....now thats something to have on your running CV!

Tops!

Well, I am very much looking forward to the bypass opening, but only so I can not use it, and the town centre will be a bit quieter... The Vecchia Trattoria there is worth a visit IMHO.

I agree - a lovely Italian. The woman in the kebab shop is scary and the chinese takeaway is great.

Which woman in the kebab shop do you mean? (There are 3 I am thinking of)

My current "rave run" is the roadworks on the Coombe Lane Flyover (A3) They have created a narrow pedestrain path across the middle of the flyover using cones and temporary crash barriers. It is particularly gratifying running past all the traffic which is at a standstill. Only problem is the fumes:-) I think I'll take my camera with me next time I go.

vecchia trattoria - top italian :-)
china garden - best chinese takeaway for miles around (but don't deliver which is a bit of a bugger if you've had a couple of beers)

have definitely never been in any of the 3 kebab shops!

oh and the lancer does a decent indian too.

actually the bypass opening brings royston back within commuting reach for me.
