A few things .......
Firstly your comment 'I get a bit lonely sometimes' made me feel quite sad ... bless!
Secondly (and related to my comment above) I think you will find getting into things like the 10k's and half marathons will be good for you. There is a bit of a buzz and real atmosphere about these races, especially the bigger ones, and it also gives you something to look forward to so I would highly recommend you dont just keep plodding along the empty highway and start signing up for a few events. It will make the world of difference in your motivation. Plus the beauty of them is you can just pick and choose which ones you enter so if you are called back on duty its no big deal.
Thirdly, just personally here, so take it for what you will, but when I first started, I used to run like the clappers thinking if I did that I would improve faster. But it wasnt until I started doing longer, slower runs that I noticed a marked improvement. Again thats just me, but I would say that whatever else you do, make sure you keep at least one slow, but long, run in your schedule each week. You will then notice that the speed will naturally pick up as you progress.
Good luck soldier! (Ive always wanted to say that)
