What works for you?

Ran a 15 mile multi terrain race yesterday. Had a great time, with great company. Stretched well afterwards as usual but this morning I was waddling like a duck! Hips are so sore. This is a learning curve for me as I've never felt so beaten up before. What do you consider to be best for recovery? What works for you?

No way can I do a recovery run today, just too sore, but will go out for another walk later just to try and loosen up a bit.

Advance preparation in the form of training for the distance before racing it is probably the biggest contributor to a prompt recovery after the race.

Otherwise, time, plenty of good food and keeping moving gently. And time.

Swimming. Better than sports massage for me! Both breast stroke and front crawl work wonders.

I also find stretching in the sauna quite helpful.

Proper preparation is the only real 'cure' but a proper 10 - 15 minute warming down run, stretching and an immediate intake of carbs and protein will help.
