The Kenyan Athletics bods have banned Chepkemai for competing for the rest of 2005 after failing to attend a training camp.

That scuppers the Radcliffe -v- Chepkemei re-run in London this year.

How does that work? I note the quote "We shall communicate this decision to the IAAF and all meet directors all over the world."

I assume the Kenyan authorities can withdraw entries into championships and representative events, and any funding too, but presumably Chepkemei can enter (e.g.) FLM as an individual? Is it just that the sanctions for doing so would prevent her from entering? And what business is it of the IAAF and meet directors?

seems abit harsh for missing one race - I don't get it?

The national associations can do things like this, for example it can be their own testing that brings about a drugs ban, and individual meets and the IAAF would have to comply with a ban for that reason, just as they would for disciplinary reasons. I agree though that AK is being stupid and shooting itself in the foot. Hopefully they'll back down.

Couldn't she do a Zola Budd and come run for Team GB?

No, because the Kenyans can object to the re-classification, a bit like Shaheen missing the Olympics because Kenya objected (with a bit more justice!) to his new Qatari nationality. By the time it would be sorted out, the ban would be long over anyway.

All very petty.

and its a bit late for her enter via the ballot...

Somehow, I think they would find a place for her....

There always a golden bond place.. running as a womble or summat..

That would be interesting to see, a womble running along at world record pace for 26 miles

yeah and Paula could run as a rhino, just to even it up.

Does seem like bully boy tactics from AK to me though. Bit of a show of strength.

"We are taking this action in order to salvage our pride,"

Oh, that's all right then!

Good news, following an apology, it seems she's back in the running! A truly historic FLM this year, me thinks.
