What do people do with their medals?

What does everyone do with their medals? I used to keep them on display, but now I am getting more it no longer seems viable.

Lets be honest, they aren't medals .... they are just trinkets ......

The fourth place person gets the same thing as the 16,345th place person. Hardly seems fair.

I have kept three or four which are a bit unusual, the rest I have binned.

My local half mara hands out exactly the same thing each year - no date, not even the year on it.  

Last year I said "no, thanks" to the person handing me one.  There really wasn't any point in taking it to throw it away.

I keep most of them in a box (Tasteful, antique type thing) and dispay any I think are quite good to look at or from special races (PB or location)
I like my trinkets as they work for me and remind me of the things I have done which many cba to or could never do. They remind me I took part and these days many of the trinkets have space to engrave time, space and date even for those sad races where I'm outside the top 3

It would cost you more in postage than I would ever give you for their value!

Trinkets or mementos, call them what you like but I do like to keep them as a reminder of the achievement I have done.

I am resisting the urge to have someone define 'achievement' in this context ...... personally I dont think the broad spectrum that is covering 13.1 miles or 26.2 miles in of itself is enough to classify as an achievement. I think there should be other conditions attached to it.

Mine are just gathering dust on a bookshelf in my study. But I will be sending one of them to DF3 in the post if he beats the corresponding time for that race at Reading.

I know longer am interested in London and if Virgin Media came up to me and said 'we'll match what we paid Mo to have you onboard next year' I would refuse on the grounds of my principles.

Why not? That would be the definition of achievement "Something accomplished successfully, especially by means of exertion, skill, practice, or perseverance." Dare I ask what these other conditions may be?

Why do I get the impression that my finishing time in Reading is going to be 1 second behind your worst ever performance???

Medals, trinkets yes same thing. Official medals are given to service personal without them even doing anything:

"The 1939 to 1945 Star was awarded for any period of operational service overseas between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945 (2 September 1945 in the Far East)."

Same with Australia.

Personally I'd much rather win a medal at the VLM for coming 12088th out of 33977, than I would for killing people, especially now when we go to Afghanistan and shoot peasants in rags with pea shooters, from our heavily armoured vehicles and Apaches in our bullet proof vests and Kevlar helmets, it's more like a duck hunt.

We could set up a trust fund for DF3. send in your unwanted medals because even the worst ones you have he still hasn't got!! 

I store mine in a landfill site just off the A12. Thankfully I have my memory so I know I did these races. Funnily enough my Dad has exactly the same attitude towards his service medals.

It's the same with holiday snaps, why? Why bother? "This is me and Doris outside the Taj Mahal" Fascinating you look like you, Doris looks like Doris and the Taj Mahal looks like the Taj Mahal. Because if there is one thing the world needs it is another picture of the Taj Mahal, there is a building sadly lacking in recorded images of it. 

And do not get me on people who record every single event in there lives on their phones. Go on go and pay good money for front row tickets to a gig and then watch the whole performance through a distorted 2" screen you muppet.

By the by since when have ducks had pea-shooters?
