What would you like to drink after a 5km run?

I am currently organising a 5km Santa Dash taking place in November 2011 and we have usually given out Hot Chocolate to the runners. From a runners perspective would you rather receive a bottle of water or energy drink instead?

Thank you in anticipation for your reply

Well I think water should be a pre-requisite anyway, but if you're gonna spend money on anything else, hot chocolate sounds spot-on for that time of year.  More satisfying than an energy drink and would probably make the race more memorable.

Large G&T, ta!

But seriously....  if you go with hot chocolate, how are you going to ensure that it is hot for all the runners?

In November? Jaegermeister.

They do Mulled Wine for the Round The Walls Race at Chester on Boxing Day.
Mind you - it was so cold my antifreeze bottle froze last year - so very welcome !

How about a flaming Drambuie to warm you up?

slip some Baileys in the hot chocolate - and you have a winner!!!

Jamaican rum

Baileys, Drambuie, Jamaican rum... I think these would all go well in hot chocolate.  In fact I reckon it's up there with Guinness and McDonald's chocolate milkshake as being a very versatile mixer for such goodies.  Where is this Santa Run?

I'd go with the rum too - there's nothing like a cheeky tipple during the day when its cold to cheer you up! Assuming though that you won't be able to serve alcohol then I'd give the hot chocolate the thumbs up!

One thing though - a Santa dash in November?? Santa will be far too busy wrapping my pressies..

I'd prefer a bottle of water, as I'm lactose intolerant and can't have hot chocolate.

Daisyjess - get yourself some Lactase tablets - take 1 or so before consuming dairy and you'll be absolutely fine. They just add the enzyme missing from your gut to breakdown the lactose in the milk. You can consume as much dairy as you want to then!

Thank you for all your advice, this dash is taking place in Bracknell, Berkshire on the 27th November

Thanks Peter, I've never heard of them before!  I'll try that

We had hot choc after our ladies 10K on Halloween last year.  It was very good for putting into the insulated cups we got as mementos

As the race HQ is village hall it was very easy to provide hot water

Daisyjess - I get mine from Nature's Best online but you can also get them from Holland and Barrett. Around £9 for 60 - Natures Best are better value as they are stronger and most of the time you only need 1 instead of 2 or 3 for a meal so they last three times as long. You can also buy Lactofree milk in semi or full - it's milk with the lactose removed if I remember right or with lactase added. But this is only any good if you are lactose intolerant - if you are allergic then don't try it!!!
