Hi all, just been to see my GP today after running the Windermere Marathon and finising with quite a lot of knee pain which hasn't really gone away. This morning I noticed an extra 'piece' of bone on my knee cap and my GP is fairly certain I have an avulsion fracture of my patella. Just wondered if anyone else has been there and if they have any runners advice for recovery!!! My GP is great but don't think he has that much experience in sports injuries.
Avulsion fractures of the patella are excedingly rare - and would usually require a high vélocity injury to come about. Have you had an xray diagnosis to confirm it? I've never heard of anyone feeling an extra piece of bone around the patella - whereabouts is it - above or below? How much pain are you in? After 5 days an avulsion fracture would still be seriously painful.
It's not impossible, but an acute quadriceps (above) or patellar (below) tendinitis would be much more common.
