beginner's running: knee problems

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to running and after having trained a fair bit I recently took part in a 10k trail race (which was very hilly). After this event I felt twinges in BOTH of my knees which went away a couple of days later. However, on my next few runs these twinges started to come back and by Wednesday of last week I was running with pain in both knees and could barely manage to run 2 miles. Could I have overdone my training and need to take a couple of weeks off (just do cross training?); could it be my shoes (I haven't covered more than 100 miles in them)? I would be very grateful for any opinions on this as I don't have any runners I can ask!
