Corn Syrup

As a youngster we used to use corn syrup as a form of energy replacement in endurance events. Can anyone tell me if there is an advantage to taking corn syrup as a way of replacing energy, I believe it is high in fructose but have no idea what advantages this has. I also assume that modern carbohydrate drinks/squeezes would be of more benefit.

I think a lot of modern drinks contain fructose, but also contain other stuff as well. From memory fructose converts quickly which leads to a quick boost and then the blood sugar level may drop, whereas other sugars take longer to absorb. I think many drinks have both.

I'm not certain on this though.
