Recent pain in foot

During my first run after the GNR I started to experience pain on the bridge of my foot (under the place my laces are tied). The pain also affected my middle two toes. I rested for a couple of weeks, but it came back again. Seems worse when I have cold feet.
I haven't changed my shoes or anything recently, and have used the same trusted shoes since March.

Just a thought. I did put the shoes through the washing machine about 6 weeks ago, and re-laced them (with the same laces). I may not have laced them exactly the same, and furthermore I can't remember if they were laced to the very top holes, which I didn't use when re-lacing.

Hi Nick,

I wonder whether you might have damaged them in the washing machine? I destroyed a pair of Brooks that way, and ended up with 3 black toenails before I realised what was causing the problem.

I hope you can work it out, whatever the problem is.

Nick..I suspect you have nothing worse than digital neuritis, I had a brief (2/3 week) spell of this during my marathon training earlier this year. It is usually caused by shoe laces being done up too tight prior to long runs. Put an ice pack over the affected area two or three times a day until it clears. Be patient though, it is a stubborn injury!

Note: The £5.99 gel warm/ice pack I bought from a local chemist a couple of years ago has been one of my best investments as a runner, just keep it in the fridge!

Hi Nick

I had this problem a few weeks ago, same sort of trusty old shoes, bought a new pair from a good running shop with the usual checking for correct fit, type etc.
Problem vitually disappeared overnight. Most of the reading I did around this subject suggested that most shoes are only good for about 600 miles of running, in my case about 5/6 months. I'd look into this if I was you.

Goo luck Cha

Can anyone give me some advice? When I first started running (back in May) the arch of my right foot was agony, I invested in some good running shoes and the problem disappeared. Now it's back with a vengeance and I can't get more than two miles without the arch of my right foot and the right side of my right knee really burning.

Friends have suggested that I "over pronate" any ideas how I can get over it, as two mile runs aren't really helping with the Marathon training I've been trying to start. I don't think its my shoes as I had them fitted properly and they're not very old. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Thanks to everyone for the advice. It looks like I have a fairly minor problem that should clear up soon. I will certainly buy a warm/cold gel pack and maybe some new shoes. Thinking about it, I am probably due some anyway.

Thanks all again,

Nick.

I think I have a similar problem. I've been running for about 9 months and about 6 weeks ago I developed a cramp like pain over the top of my left foot spreading down into my toes. It lasts about 3-4 days but keeps reoccuring every time I run more than 3 miles or so. I feel it most when I stop running and take off my shoe, sometimes its so bad I can hardly walk the next day. I've been wearing a pair of pretty crappy shoes (cross trainers) but have just bought some NB 854's which I hope will help a bit.
If anyone has any advice I'd be most grateful.
Cheers

I think shoes shrink (at least temporarily) when you put them through the wash, which might explain the situation (tighter fit - pressure on nerves etc)

Hi Nick I had a similar injury to this a few weeks ago and all I needed was a couple of weeks rest also keep icing the area and you should feel better maybe you damaged the shoes by using the washing Machine i did that once and the shoes were never the same also I think my injury was caused by wearing the wrong type of shoe so maybe go to a specialist running shop to see if they can help you good luck and hope you have a quick recovery

I know everyone is telling you of similar probs, my solution was one i read in runners world. Try lacing your shoes differently, ie lace the bottom two set of holes as normal then miss the next set of holes so there is a gap and lace the other holes as usual. It really works for me. Good luck.
