I've been running for 4 mths & have been training for the Great South. Everything has been going really well, until 2 weeks ago when I had some discomfort during an 8 mile run, on my inner knees. But it stopped after the run & hasn't bothered me since. Until last night.

I completed 5.8 miles of an 8 mile run, & then my friends husband had to come & get us as it was painful to walk. It started in one knee then progressed to the other. Gutted. So I went home, RICE, and this morning I'm wearing a support. It doesn't hurt at all when resting but it's a bit uncomfortable to walk. What do I do?! Can I be ready & fit for Sunday? Should I see my GP for advice?

I did a 5.5 mile run last Thur, but I'd not run for 10 days due to illness & it was a fantastic run, no pain at all

Anyone?

Prob a bit late in the day to say get ur shoes checked etc.  Assume you re looking for divine intervention for Sunday?

With no idea what the problem is its difficult for anyone to answer.

Personally I would not do anything until Sunday, RICE . Maybe ibuprofen gel? or what works for me better than most things is the ice/heat thing, as it gets the blood to rush to the area to speed up healing.  Then get onto the start line and see what happens.  You can always pull out.

This is just what I would do personally, am not a doctor but know what it feels like to have done all the training and then have an injury so close to an event.  If in pain before the day just walking I would not run on the day.

I had inner knee pain a long time ago and it was actually due to weak glutes (may wanna get things looked at professionally after)

Good Luck

Thanks runnersbeen, very helpful

I am new to running as I mentioned, so really just after good solid advice. I've Googled the hell out of it & am not doing any training at all this week. It's niggling today, so although I will certainly attempt the run, I'm not certain I'll make it round. And if it's like this on Sat then I defo won't be running on Sun.

My shoes were fitted about 2 mths ago, following a gait analysis, so I would hope it isn't that, but I guess you can never be sure. I'll certainly be consulting a physio, probably next week. I'd do it this week if I could afford it!

Thanks again!

There will be many more races and you only have 2 knees ... at the moment if that length of run is causing you that much trouble and this long to recover then it would not be advisable to run this weekend and risk more damage that will take longer to recover from
It is not easy to diagnose on line ... have a look at this and see if anything helps?

well join me and my Moreton's neuroma at the back! I am going to get over that finish line even if I have to walk it

well how did you get on Betty, did you manage to finish?

Hi Andy, well I did finish, to my shame it was 2:16 but I had to walk a fair bit as the pain was nasty and the road cambers worked against me. I was overtaken by Batman and Robin, Mr Potato Head, a banana and a giant cockroach....oh the shame!
Did you run? How did you do?

Oh well, but there is no shame in being overtaken by anyone no matter what they are dressed as.

We left home at 6am got caught in a load of traffic, had a 25 min walk from the car park. I was knackered before I started and struggled from 5 miles. Glad I did it, but the route was boring and def not worth traveling a long distance for in my opinion.  Wouldn't surprise me if some people were still trying to get out from South Sea. LOL
