Help me with my pains please!

Hi everyone!

I was hoping for some advice on an awful pain ive been getting in my legs whilst running-

Im new to running (doing the c25k) and have just managed the 25 minute runs twice now but have had to overcome the most terrible pain in my left shin/ankle during the run, which gets worse for about 5 minutes after the run but settles down to absolutely nothing otherwise.

Its in a muscle on my left leg, just on the left hand side of my shin bone,  starts about 2 or 3 inches above the bend of my ankle and finishes about 4 inches higher. Its been a little swollen or just enlarged after running. This is a muscular pain rather than any kind of injury, but id very much like peoples advice on how to get it better!! As I said it doesn’t hurt other than when/just after im running, but its making my improvement very difficult! Ive been doing my best to stretch it well before running although its a fairly difficult muscle to get at.

Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like a compartment syndrome of the anterior muscle.

You're right, they are difficult to stretch out, but hat does appear to be the solution in cases like this.

The way I stretch this involves having to crouch down with the problem leg fully extended. Then somehow pushing down on the foot of the same leg.

If the muscle is getting a bit inflamed then some ice over the area will help.

Most obvious question is - what shoes are you running in?  If you haven't already, it would be worth getting a proper fitting at a specialist running shop.

As it only affects one side, it could be a muscle imbalance of posture problem that a sports physio could help with.  If you stand on one leg, are you more stable on your right leg than your left leg?

One thing worth trying is loosening the laces a bit, as I occassionally get a pain in my shins if my shoes are a bit tight, and loosening the laces almost instantly relieves it.  This might not work - but its an easy test.
