Knee & Calf Pain

After running the top of my knee is sore particularly coming down stairs when I sometimes also get a pain at the top of my calf as well. I have being told to stretch the quads and do knee strengthening exercises but I find these only aggravate the problem. Have decided to stop running for awhile and have begun icing. Would it be ok to walk or would it be better to rest completely?
