Occasional 'twinge' in knee when going up stairs

Also some stuff about stitch

I've had this for years, way before I started running.  Sometimes when going up stairs ( and extremely rarely when going down stairs),  I feel a slight twinge in my right knee.  The thing is, it never happens while running.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  Do I just have to strengthen my quads - I'm doing that now anyway, along with various other leg exercises on my Total Trainer.

One other thing, if I get stitch while out there running, I usually try to run through it - which usually works; is that the right thing to do?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
