How long before race?

Just a quick question for people who have sports massages before marathons, how long before the race do you have the treatment? Morning of the race, 1 day, 2days etc?

I have very tight hamstrings, calves and hip flexors, which I am diligently working on with physio, strengthening, stretching, yoga and pilates but I wonder if I'd benefit from treatment before I run the marathon in April. My previous marathon experience has only been Medoc, and I think the alcohol helped me loosen up and/or ignore the pain!

I'd usually leave a gap of about 4 days between the massage and the race.

if the massage is a typical deep tissue massage, then you may find the muscles will need a couple of days to recover from that pounding, so trying to run on them soon after is likely to hurt. but a couple of days later, they will be nicely relaxed and ready to go

Thank you, that does make sense and will give me something to do in the taper week so that I feel as though I'm being productive, not just lazing around eating things!

Next time you are in Brighton go to The Jog Shop and ask for Kader. He is the best around and will advise you.

Great, thanks for that! I'm going down to Brighton on Sunday for the marathon training seminar, I will try to pop in then ... otherwise I'll be down for the half in Feb.
