Shin Pain

I've been gradually increasing my mileage for a few months now and started to get shin pain. This eased between runs and was aggravated during runs, but was never bad enough to stop me. Over time the area of my shins affected decreased until I hardly noticed any pain. I thought it was going but at the weekend my son accidentally knocked my shin with his booster seat and I nearly went through the roof. It was just a tap really but the pain was immense. I've read about stress fractures and am now wondering if I may have one. I've stopped all running in the meantime. Can anyone advise?
