What is the point?
Are you going to arrest me?
They'd never go for it, given her slave status.
So we can assume there are no benefits to this circumcision
Think of it like foot binding - a cultural practice which fed a desire for tiny feet that were considered a status symbol in women. Not being able to walk proved you didn't have to work. No benefit other than crippling agony.
FGM is all about an idea of what female "purity" is and is considered a sign of "honour." Its root cause is female subjugation.
There are some interesting benefits listed on some websites, unbelievable!!
"Circumcision reduces excessive sensitivity of the clitoris which may cause it to increase in size to 3 centimeters when aroused, which is very annoying to the husband, especially at the time of intercourse."
"Circumcision reduces excessive sexual desire."
Please don't call it circumcision - that minimises the extent of it and trivialises it. Hence the reason it is now referred to as FGM (female genital mutilation). If you don't want to use the term FGM then be a bit more accurate and call it castration. The pain and suffering, both acute and lifelong that this barbarity leads to is mind blowing. Asking a question like 'what is the point?' ......... really.......... Get a grip Karen.
To be honest I don't think Karen even thought about what to call it when she posted. It's just the usual cut and paste crap, only this thread (purely by accident) is on a slightly more serious subject.
and it needs to be discussed....as some people on here didn't even realise that it happens to girls in this country
Yes, there is that Seren.
Wow Karen is a philospher !!! Lovely
I am horrified that some folks are unaware of it. Yes it should be known about and has been very much in the news over the last few days as one of the online petitions gained over the required number of signatures and a statement was released by the government. There have been numerous articles on line and in print in the broadsheets. I first found out it gave me nightmares for days, I was a young girl at the time and just couldn't wrap my mind around such barbarity. I am not just concerned about UK victims but also about the thousands of young women all over the world who are affected by this and lack the health care we have in this country to help them with the aftermath of the abuse. I do know however that there are some wonderful women and men working hard to stop it.
I shouldn't let a thread like this get to me - I know it's not the place for long discussions but I cannot abide any kind of frivolity surrounding it. .. I should have steered clear as I know the kind of thing that usually accompanies the OP.
