Complications after Sclerotherapy

I had sclerotherapy (foam injections) on my long saphenous vein nearly 3 weeks ago.  I was told to start exercising as soon as I felt able to and was cautioned that while cycling should be okay, running might hurt because of the impact so to be careful.I started cycling a week after with the big compression bandages still on and was fine.  I also managed a 3 mile run/walk the day the bandages came off.  Since, I’ve managed more cycling.  I’ve been wearing a compression stocking during the day as instructed as my job involves sitting down a lot.On Tuesday I ran 4 miles without the compression stocking on and felt good – no pain.  But in the middle of the night I woke with excruciating pain around the old vein.  It calmed down enough to let me turbo last night but today I woke again to a very sharp localised pain with pain radiating from it and a large swollen bruise.  Unlike the other day the pain hasn’t worn off despite taking ibuprofen and paracetamol. I’m worried I’ve ruptured a vein in the same area.  I called the consultant and was told that unless it’s hot and inflamed (i.e. infected) I should be alright.  I can’t help but think I’ve done something quite major.  Any docs or nurses out there who can anyone offer any advice or help?

I'd stick to swimming for a fortnight if that doesn't cause the pain that running and cycling has. It must be a real pain - otherwise you wouldn't have bothered to start a thread about it. (Oh I say that's rather good for me.)

I'm not a doctor by a long way of course.

NHS you were.

If you think you've done something major then you should really be asking your doctor or nurse to look at it for you.

However it sounds like localised extravasation, which is just blood leaking into the tissues from the ruptured vein. Uncomfortable and unsightly but will settle down in a week or so.

Thanks Dr Wonko.

And I've started the swim specific training today.  My swimming technique will be faultless in two weeks...then I might just start back on the bike again and leave the running for a while longer.
