Hi All

I have just called the FLM helpline to see if they will shed anylight onto whats happening re cheques and I was told that if you have been accepted or bequeathed but rejected the money is coming out now. If you haven't had your cheque cashed you are not in and you didn't bequeath.

So basically no cashed cheque no place.

cashed cheque - if you didn't bequeath your in, if you did you will have to wait till December

Simon,

Thanks for taking the initiative. I'm off to twiddle my thumbs for the next 6 weeks......and do some running of course.

I'm a bequeather, Chq cleared on 29th...and as first-time FLM'er what are the two distinct packages in December that arive that lets you know in a nano-second whther you have made it in or not??
After my disappointing 4.34 in Dublin Monday gonna be a bad thumb-twiddling six weeks I can tell.

Makes sense, I'm a bequeather - doh !

So lets try and calculate our chances of getting in:
90K applicants for 45K places last year so 50% chance of being succesful in ballot.

X bequeathers applied, 50% unsuccessful = X/2

1000 places for X/2 = 1000/(X/2) = our % chance of getting accepted if unsuccesful in the initial ballot.

So does anyone know the total number of bequeathers (X) from last year ???

(I really am taking this far too serious ! Only another 6 weeks to wait)

Ian,

If you receive a package containing a fleece you get to take part from the comfort of your armchair!

Basically, bulky package not good!!

NickB, I think you are overestimating the amount of places available (number of golden bonds, elite runners etc). I also think that there are over 100k applications. In the past, I've seen it guessed at about 20% chance, increasing if you've had a few rejections already & all that.

Be nice to know the real methods of FLM selection & chances though.

Best of luck to you all, I have given my entry money to charity to earn good Karma, to have a rebirth as a 3 minute miler. Afetr 3 rejections and 2 golden bond runs in 2000 and 2001 I am hopefull. If I get in perhaps we can all meet up in London?

Interesting that the system penalises you with lack of knowledge, if you're a bequeather.

Hardly a fitting reward for a generous spirit is it?

Does anyone know when abouts in December then? I think they're taunting us by cashing the cheques early! As most people seem to be writing about their experiences on other threads, here goes....yes, my cheques been cashed, I'm a marathon virgin and I put down an average finishing time, so I think my chances lie quite close to the snowball's in hell.

Do you reckon if I write to Santa it will help? I've been a good boy all year.
30/10/2002 at 20:06
Santa entered last year and got rejected so he ran the Lapland 10k instead.

six weeks to go and the tension is rising.
It is going to be a nightmare wait.

Good luck to all.

SNAP!
I think the cheques are usually cashed about the 5 - 15 November if you are in are they not and then the post brings you the news about the 8 December. I've ran it several times in the past and that was the usual dates. Maybe they are different this time. My cheque hasn't been cashed but I've not managed to get in for the last couple of years.

I wonder how much the fleeces would retail for? About £20 is the norm for similar items as I recall?

If that was indeed the case, you could end up in effect getting the fleece for £7, £3 or - if you're a student - nothing! (assuming you count £20 of the full bequeathed entrance fee as going to charity)

I know we'd all far rather be running the FLM, but better a nice fleece than yet another T-shirt imo ;)

MESSAGE FOR SLO MO

No they wouldn't tell me - they said they didn't have access to anything that could tell them - I didn't believe them !!

Simon,

the thing is, when they tell you, 100000 people will call them!
I wouldn`t tell you in this case.

Is anybody member of a club? Apparently the club I've just joined gets 5 places which they allocate by pulling names out of a hat. On the basis that most of the club runners would already qualify on good for age times I'm hoping my chances are greater than through the official ballot! (ie there'll only be me and one other beginner wanting the places...)
31/10/2002 at 14:06
Yes Laura - my club gets places too. However they limit the draw to those who've been a member for a year or more, presumably to stop people just joining for a chance of the place. Your club might not have this rule of course.

Then again if there's only two of you - no sense wasting a place, although last year all sorts of club members I'd never seen before turned up to enter for the draw.

I've just joined a club as well (after I posted my application form!) to mainly run with people over the winter. Laura, its worth asking at the club as after the initial excitement of seeing my cheque cashed I'm not sure what to think! I get the feeling our club places are allocated by the committee, but I'm sure someone who has been at the club longer than me would get preference. Good luck anyway!
