Antibiotics Two Days Out or Wait?

hi all

I have a tooth abcess that came up last night, and have been given amoxycilin by the dentist to start right away.

So far the pain isn't too bad so I'm wondering if I could leave starting the antibios until after the marathon.  Im taking ibuprofen but not too often.

I'm worried about getting the runs from the antibiotics, or increased wheeze [already have mild asthma].

Anxiety is through the roof and so any advice would be lovely.

Start the antibiotics, and get some Yakult or similar to combat any diarrhoea. If you've got a yucky abcess now and leave it, it might start causing you pain and make you feel generally yuck by Sunday.
Fingers crossed for you whatever you decide.

You would be better off starting them straightaway - a tooth abscess is a bacterial infection and could easily turn into septicaemia or affect your heart with endocarditis if you run 26.2 miles without treating it (with my medical hat on!). I would start antibiotics now and use immodium if it affects your tummy. Also as difficult as it is not to run on sunday, I would think twice if you have evn a slight temperature or feel unwell over the next day.I do feel for you - good luck!

Yes I would start now. Running marathons tends to hit your immune system pretty hard so you don't want to be facing a compromised system with an infection ready to take hold.

Not all antibiotics give you the runs everytime anyway.
